Amazon customers have voted the PlayStation 2 as the best console of all time.

The PlayStation 2 is also the bestselling console of all time with 157.68 million units sold during its lifetime. That is ahead of the DS and original Game Boy, which sold 154.88 million and 118.69 million units, respectively. The PSOne is the second bestselling console with 104.25 million units sold.

Yeah, the Ps2 is one cool console.

The only console that comes close is the PS1 and maybe NES and SNES.

Yep. Wish people would respect Sony more. What they accomplished was extremely impressive.

This, Sony made gaming "cool" and popular with PS. When Nintendo was on top with NES and SNES, gaming was considered for kids or for nerds.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Just an amazing library games. Happens to hold my 2 favorite games of all-time in FFX and Persona 4 on it.

The PS2 was the last great console for me in my opinion.

I'd still give the edge to the SNES but I can't complain

The console industry has fallen quite a bit since the PS2 days, sadly.

My top 3 would be:

1. Megadrive

2. Snes

3. Playstation 1

People on a gaming forum talking about how Sony justified their hobby as less nerdy than it actually is, okay then.

The PS2 was my least favorite console of that gen at the time, but I appreciate it a whole lot more now for its JRPG library. Still, it is hard for me to call it the greatest of all time when my favorite games from that generation were not on the PS2.

On paper it probably is the best console ever, going by sheer sales numbers and quality games released. But it certainly isn't my favourite.

I think many of the "stand-out" titles of that gen were found elsewhere, but in sheer number of game releases the PS2 beats them all.

It was a different era back then. Nowadays people cling to the one or two "good" exclusives that might release in a given year...

It's the most overrated console of all time, in my opinion. It was my least favorite console of that generation and my least favorite Sony console.

I guess it was great if you love JRPGs or if it was your only console that generation, but I didn't feel it was anything special because it always had the worst version of multiplats, it wasn't very innovative, and since I hate JRPGs, I didn't feel it had many great exclusives for my taste other than God of War.

I personally had no interest in the PS2, but cool for it.

Same here. I think it's my favorite console in regards to what Sony has released, but there is one thing about the PS2 that just puts me off in comparison to other consoles.

-Reliance on multitap, while SEGA (Dreamcast), Microsoft (XBOX) and Nintendo (N64, GameCube) used four controller ports.

This is the same company who eventually released analog controllers for the PlayStation ONE in response to the N64 popularizing the concept (despite getting it's ass kicked). One would think Sony would release a revision with four controller ports, but nope, they only put built in sockets for online gaming in their revisions.

As one who grew up with three siblings and does like to have friends over when I can, this was a shame. Not to mention, I can't think of one go to multiplayer game on the PS2. XBOX had Halo 1/2. GameCube had Melee and Mario Kart. What did the PS2 have that made the people want to throw a gaming party? DDR? Guitar Hero? Tekken?

That's not to say I wasn't happy with the multiplayer games I did get for PS2 (such as Tekken 5 and most notably, Gauntlet: Dark Legacy).

How did N64 make it past NES/Famicom and Genesis? ...imo

No it was great if you loved pretty much all genres. I played all of my FG's and action on it. I used it for fewer multiplats, which ran better on PS2 anyway (games like CVS2).

PS2 hardware wasn't as good as the Xbox but it had one of the best libraries around.

I agree that the PS2 was the best console although I wouldn't argue if someone picked the NES or SNES. Although the first Xbox had online, PS2 had by far the best library ever. You have to remember it was the only console that had GTA, Final fantasy, Metal gear Solid, God of War, Guitar Hero, etc. No wonder it was the best selling console ever

@Fairmonkey: Grand Theft Auto was also on the Xbox. Metal Gear Solid was on the Xbox and GameCube.

@PurpleMan5000: GTA was eventually ported to xbox but much later. Metal Gear Solid trilogy was only available on Playstation in those days. PS2 was the best because it had the most games

PS2 is a great console I'm sure, but it isn't close to being my personal favorite. PS1 is higher than it for me, maybe due to the fact that I didn't own the PS2 and played it at a friend's or the fact that any game I couldn't get on the GC I got on PC. Highly respect it regardless and nowadays will find any exclusives for it and will play them.

PS2 wasn't the most powerful, it didn't have the most resoloution or framerate, it just had the most games and diverse library which made it great. Ever since then Sony tried to get that greatness but can never reach it again. So last gen and this gen they're just trying to still live off the PS2's greatness and everything else is just pure hype.
