Amazon acquires Twitch for $970M; THIS TIME FOR REAL

#1 Edited by Salt_The_Fries (10387 posts) -

There has been an open letter of its CEO about the acquisition put on their main page, so that pretty much seals it.

Besides, here's an article about this:

http://www.polygon.com/2014/8/25/6067061/amazon-confirms-acquisition-of-twitch-for-970-million

What do you think? To me, it's good coz there will be more competition, and it's gonna be healthier for the customers. If Google were to take over, they'd have monopolized almost entire market with this move.

nothing worth watching on them thats why, just multiplats, remasters and indie games that have been on pc for years.

Good, Amazon will give them the proper backing and still allow it to largely remain the same.

Google wouldve put in so many restrictive changes and slowly killed it.

I do wonder about the potential influx of ads though.

#22 Posted by seanmcloughlin (38219 posts) -

Better than Google and youtube getting it. This will hopefully mean at the least it stays the same or can improve. It shouldn't get any worse anyway

#23 Posted by verbalfilth (4738 posts) -

Amazon has been taking a lot of interest in gaming lately... This scares me a bit.

Also, in before amazon prime paywalls for specific features on twitch...

What's the logic behind this? I don't know why amazon still gets so much love. Their prices on every day items are not great anymore.. All they have done lately is raise the price of prime, raise the minimum purchase amount for free shipping, release a crap console and a crap phone. Their tablets have also always been crap

I don't hate them or anything, i'm just surprised they have been getting so many free passes on their mediocre products or raised prices; especially from gamers who seem to be the biggest critics

#25 Edited by verbalfilth (4738 posts) -

@Couth_: let's not overlook their ongoing war with publishers and their willingness to throw authors and readers under the bus in the process.

A lot of Amazon's endeavors are very questionable.

I'd be more worried than happy about this news if I were a Twitch enthusiast, which I am not.

#26 Posted by foxhound_fox (91118 posts) -

I'm all for free market acquisitions, but the growing media mega-corporations are getting worrying.

#27 Posted by AdrianWerner (28228 posts) -

Good. Amazon has long history of buying companies and then letting them operate without any real changes. It and Facebook were the only companies that could buy it without destroying the site.

And most of all I'm glad it's not Google.

#28 Posted by madsnakehhh (15225 posts) -

Nice, i'm glad is not Google, i use Twitch a lot, i wouldn't know what to do without Team Sp00ky and my regular dosis of Starcraft and DOTA2.

#29 Edited by resevl4rlz (3308 posts) -

in before, you have to have amazon prime in order to watch twitch

Aside from stopping Google from becoming the next evil empire, what are the benefits of Amazon acquiring Twitch over them?

#32 Edited by kuu2 (8138 posts) -

Way better than Google buying them.
