What do you make up of that? Now all of a sudden many are realizing that there is more money to be made by going solo thanks to Jim Sterling. Do you see this as good or bad thing?

I think they failed to realize that Jim Sterling is a personality, while they are, at best, average reviewers.

People like Jim's work because it's Jim. Can we really say the same for these folks?

Would any of us put up for a Tom McShea patreon for example?

Is Colin and Greg Live a show about how much they can jerk off over Playstation?

Fine by me. Audrey Drake left IGN and her shitty reviews went with her. The Nintendo team has improved significantly since.

If IGN plays their cards right, same thing could happen for the PlayStation squad

@Xaero_Gravity: the only loss I see here is the coverage of some games only Colin seemed to care about. Unfortunately it seems like he went full finalstar with those previews. If someone with slightly more objective, yet personal, measures could help, that'd be awesome (cough Nick Robinson cough)

If it's one thing I've learned in life, it's that you never, ever, go full finalstar.

Yea but like a subscription based style of crowd funding. You pay whatever you want a month to get extra stuff.

Gonna miss podcast beyond too although they stated they may continue it indefinitely at their new digs. Currently going through the backlog of all the previous 'casts as 'something to listen to' in the background. On episode 207.

To me, that's just a career move, maybe they can possibly make more this way. If you play the crowd sourcing angle just right, or YouTube or any service that gets you money through ads and you get enough of a audience then it can be very lucrative.

Positive:

+ Patreon is funded by players and not gaming corporations. It's the gaming corporations that pay for ads on big sites and that's the reason these sites would never flop a completely broken game like say Unity. It just fucks up any kind of integrity a review could have (gerstmann)

Negative:

- I never really cared for these guys.

I highly doubt that patreon alone will be able to provide enough (sustained) monthly income for 4 people to live off comfortably. So they will probably have to run ads/sponsored broadcasts

In which case they shouldn't use patreon :P

It's what I like about Jim Sterling anyway, he got into shit sometimes with his uncensored opinions about big companies like Ubisoft, some companies refused to send him review copies lol. It's a very noble cause and it shows so well what exactly is wrong with gaming 'journalism'

But yeah, they are asking for quite a hefty sum if they need to pay 4 wages and for all their equipment...

in only a few hours the patreon is already at $7,000 a month and it's only gonna grow even more with time. They have a partnership with Twitch and Youtube too, so they get money from subscriptions, advertisements and donations. These 4 guys are gonna be swimming in money very soon.

Oh, and not not mention that they will continue their Beyond podcast with IGN.

Whoa that's a pretty big deal. People might be hating in here, but you can't deny the facts. These guys have increased the view count for Podcast Beyond by a lot since they took over.

Not sure how this will go though. Seems risky.

They're getting almost as much as Jim and will probably get more seeing how this is still new. However they are 4 guys while Jim is just one man.

Edit: They also have another patreon where they're getting $13,726 a month. That means they're getting twice as much as Jim.

Yep, only instead of focusing on a sole project as the goal like Kickstarter, this is a monthly donation made to people like Jim Sterling to fund their work.
