3DS losing Layton and Fantasy Life sequels to mobile

Two Level-5 franchises that have recently called 3DS home, Fantasy Life and Professor Layton, are getting sequels. However, those sequels will be coming not for 3DS or any other traditional handheld gaming device, but smartphones.

At a Level-5 event in Japan last night, the developer announced new entries in the two franchises,Siliconera reports. Fantasy Life 2 appears to resemble its 3DS predecessor, with cartoonish graphics, 12 different lives (the game's terminology for jobs) to pursue, and so on. One change is an increased focus on building up your city, perhaps in response to the popularity of empire-building in mobile sensations like Clash of Clans and Game of War.

While the move in platforms is sure to annoy those who dismiss mobile gaming, making matters worse is that both sequels carry numbers: Fantasy Life 2: Two Moons and the Village of God and Layton 7. This suggests they are the next full entries in these series, rather than simple mobile spin-offs like what we've seen from Assassin's Creed, Pokemon, and Dragon Age.

Just because these games are coming to mobile doesn't preclude them from seeing release on 3DS--and, indeed, Siliconera notes that Layton 7 was originally announced in 2013 as coming to 3DS in addition to iOS and Android. But there was no mention of 3DS versions during last night's event, so it remains to be seen if there is any chance of seeing these series continue on handhelds.

Nintendo itself will be entering the mobile game development business, as it recently announced a partnership with fellow Japanese company DeNA. It's a move that goes against what Nintendo has been saying for years, though it claims it isn't something it was forced into doing.

Damn. With smartphones getting better and better, I guess stuff like this is the inevitable. This makes me think about the future of dedicated portable gaming consoles. What do you think is the future, SW?

I don't mind playing games on smartphones.

Mainstream Zelda , Mario, DK and Metroid will stay on consoles. Once you need a controller for the game it's better to keep it on a console. These titles should work well on mobile though.

IOS/Android getting games first every single time now a days

PC is getting games after IOS/Android gets them an there just ports of phone games basically with phone controls basically by some third rate studio

RPG's an stuff don't work as well i dont think tho or maybe like fighters or racing games those will look better on consoles i think

certain games this could work for imo like kirby a donkey kong type game where u jump over barrels with ur finger that could work i could see a em fzero with tilt control or something the ideas are endless theres huge sea of gamers out there who wanna play htose games on phones

don't u think its weird that a huge dev is going to mobile instead of 3ds? bro this is a huge loss the dmg control is happening mobile shouldn't be the first place to bring good games it should be the last place u go imo

How did the 3DS "lose" anything? Only way that's possible is if these games were first 3DS titles but then switched to mobile.

I thought they were finished with the Layton series. I see this as some type of lame Layton based card game, so whatever. As for Fantasy Life 2, it looks like Level 5 turned into F2P garbage. Good job Level 5.

I've heard they're bigger on smartphone gaming in Japan, it'll be interesting to see if gaming on these platforms has a market in the US, most of those I know that smartphone game pretty much just play the free stuff and they're not really gamers period, think the last games I've seen anybody play has been Angry Bird and Words With Friends.
