Is standing your 360 up verticaly bad for it? Does it block needed air flow? Would buying a cooling stand like the pelican one eliminate this problem if it exists.

Me and all my friends have our 360 vertical. I think it looks better that way. I've had mine 2 days short of a year now with no problems running verticle. No airflow problems unless you have it stuffed in a real tight closed space.

Keep it horizontal and with plenty of space around it for air flow, just in case.

In my personal opinion, yes it's bad. Not for air flow or anything, but the console is so touchy when a disc is spinning inside I wouldn't risk it. Any significant nudge could leave you with a nice circular scratch on your disc. If its secured, then its no problem.

No, no and yes. I use the newer version of the Pelican fan stand called "The Cooler". It does make a noticeable, but not drastice difference in the heat. Most importantly, it pushes the heat up to the dvd drive and away from the motherboard and chips. It does not damage your 360because it uses USB. It rests on the fan stand where there is tons of ventilation below it whereas there would be nothing without it. http://gear.ign.com/articles/763/763900p1.html IGN proved the nay-sayers wrong (it says its $19.99 but my local EB Games had it slashed to $9.99)

I've heard coolers encourage dust build up, you'll have to clean out the dust more often.

If it doesn't have support on both sides, it can be potentially dangerous. If it falls, not only could it damage the console itself, but it'll likely shred your game as well.
