GS not allowing me to create a poll.. so have to do with this. thanks to fellow SW'ers giving feedback on my f1st attempt, do you prefer 1080P 30 FPS or 720p 60 FPS? (since us console only gamers don't have a choice) what will you take, if given the choice? i will keep updating this as frequently as possible. P.S (last poll went really well despite people saying "this is a stupid question", got some really great nintendo salt from it, don't let anyone tell you any different)

Depends entirely on what the game is, there are some games that just need to look the best they possibly can and framerate is not that big of a deal and there are some that need to perform as optimally as possible.

The correct and only answer is both.

@T3H_1337_N1NJ4: game companies offer 1080p every time.. what do you think is the reason for it?

yes, think there will be the same amount of strain on the hardware, right? if you had to stick with one, without any option, what would you choose for the majority of the games?

I can't answer that because that is based upon a hypothetical which doesn't actually exist in reality, it's entirely dependent on the specific game.

This isn't a black and white question, there is massive amounts of gray area.

It depends. Fast action games need high framerates. A slower, stealth or horror game for example, graphics might be more imporatant and 30fps could be fine.

but if you had to choose one, what would you take? for example, developers don't offer you any choice in what resolution you want.

If I didn't have an option, then FPS would be my choice, as it affects gameplay. That's a big reason why COD was/is so massive on consoles I think, it's slick and responsive gunplay. Many other FPS games feel slow and chunky in comparison.

As a PC gamer and a gamer in general I am incapable of answering your question as the intricacies are far beyond just a simple X or Y answer. I know I am probably frustrating you right now but this is way too much of a blanket scenario which has little bearing on reality. If you starting listing off specific games this could be answered on an individual basis however it's a general question where there is no answer.

Some games need to look beautiful, some games need to perform as optimally as possible.

hmm, ok. since i think there are a lot more games that would benefit far more from FPS than resolution.

Let me put it to you this way tushar.

I played Counter-Strike for years so I'll use Counter-Strike: Source as a citing example. In CS:S what the game looks like is of zero importance, to gain a competitive edge you want the FPS to be consistently as high as possible, the settings as low as possible to simplify the environment and a high gamma shift to eliminate dark spots in maps. This is an example of a game where framerate is of considerable more importance than the resolution or graphical fidelity of the game.

A game like Shenmue 3 though? The game world needs to be as beautiful as possible as performance is of much less importance, it's all about immersion, presence and 'realism' in the game world. In this instance there is no need for a high framerate, it doesn't negatively impact the game experience, but a lower resolution and lower graphical fidelity would.

There is no X or Y answer, anyone who actual gives you one is an idiot.

I usually say 60fps is better but recently I did a test and I honestly couldn't tell the difference. Obviously 60fps is objectively better but I wouldn't mind sacrificing it for more graphical fidelity as I can't see the benefit of having it but luckily I primarily game on PC so I don't need to make cutbacks.

Entirely dependant on the game. For stuff like Uncharted? 1080p 30 fps for sure. For Drive Club, Battlefield, Planetside, etc. 60 fps.

yup. I'm not going to choose just one and stick with that for everything. Depending on the game, I'll prefer a higher resolution or a higher fps.

On PC you can have both and even better but if someone forces me choose one then, I'd say 720p60fps. I prefer higher frame rates. Makes experience a lot better.

Pretty much any game (except maybe for slow paced adventures and puzzle games) would benefit more from 60 fps than higher resolution, so I'd go with 720p 60fps.

primarily i was asking this because developer doesn't offer a choice, so i wanted to know the consumer's opinion on it.

Devs should be smart about it. An Uncharted or Tomb raider game is fine either way I guess, but 1080p looks shinier than 720p, so it'll probably get more praise at 1080p30. If you're going to make a racer, or a sports game, or a shooter, or anything that requires reflexes and recieving as many images in a second as possible, then don't use 30fps; keep the res as high as possible but getting 60fps at all times.

yup, your average (casual) gamers prefer graphics over FPS since they want a game to truly look next-gen. devs have been really logical about that

Depends on the game. Shooters need to be 60 fps. Other games like hack and slash or rpgs can get away with 30 fps. I'd prefer 1080p30 for every game besides shooters if it can't reach 60.

If it must be one or the other, 720p/60fps without a doubt.

And now Speak_Low is going to tell us that we're all sheep for having such a preference.

As I said in the other thread though.. this should be the one graphics option that console gaming has. 1080p @30, or 720p @60.

I thought I already answered your question. 1080p30fps as I can't tell the difference between 30fps and 60fps. I'm not a console gamer so this doesn't affect.

one side is 30fps and the other side 60fps. Do you honestly see even a marginal difference between the two?

720p sucks.

1080p at 30fps is fine with me if it's a constant 30. I've been playing games on my PS4 like that and I've enjoyed all of them.

It's not my choice...if I had my way it would be 1080p at 60fps....but the 30fps doesn't bother me.

720 just looks bad.

It's very game dependent for me. In most cases I couldn't really care less as long as I'm having fun with a game. However when it comes to a fighting game or fast hack and slash (ex. Bayonetta) 60 frames is definitely preferred

Depends on the game.

Both are fine depending. For instance, for Fighting games I want 60fps, but for TellTale games I am fine with 30fps.

I'm not going to generalize for every genre.

There is no X or Y answer, anyone who actual gives you one is an idiot.

pretty bold statement there skippy

It's a game dependent question, you can't give a blanket answer and expect to be taken seriously.

lulz.

OF COURSE IT'S GAME DEPENDENT. You don't get more captain obvious than that.

OP is asking a general question of preference. A hypothetical one. If those were your two choices across the board, which would you pick?

Pointless to get a 4k monitor if your hardware can't support it
