The first device using NVIDIA's Tegra K1 SoC has been officially announced, the Xiaomi MiPad.

Tegra K1 is an ARM SoC that is utilizes NVIDIA's desktop Kepler architecture. This allows developers to create games seamlessly between PC and mobile. PC games such as Serious Sam 3 and Trine 2 have already been demonstrated on Tegra K1. It has been confirmed that Serious Sam 3 will be running on Tegra K1 at higher settings than the Xbox 360 version. Unreal Engine 4 is also running on Tegra K1.

NVIDIA’s Tegra K1 Powers Xiaomi’s First Tablet

Fast. Xiaomi does everything fast.

They sell phones fast. They develop blazing fast devices. Its Tegra 4-powered Mi3 was the world’s fastest phone at launch. They’re growing fast, too: Xiaomi is now one of the world’s largest smartphone vendors.

And now, they’re the first to build a tablet with our out-of-this-world fast Tegra K1 mobile processor.

Launched today in Beijing, the MiPad is the culmination of four years of planning and hard work. The Mi Pad features a 7.9-inch display with 2,048 x 1,536 resolution. Its 6700 mAh battery means its good for up to 1300 hours of standby time, 86 hours of music playback, or 11 hours of video streaming. It comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB, or 64 GB on-board memory – and a microSD slot for expandable storage. It also captures amazing photos and perfect selfies with 8 MP rear and 5 MP front cameras.

This isn’t the first time we’ve worked together. Last year, we worked with Xiaomi on its flagship Mi3 smartphone – the first Tegra 4 phone. Xiaomi sold 100,000 of them in under 90 seconds last October.

This year, Xiaomi is moving into tablets.Inside the Mi Pad: our 192 core mobile processor, Tegra K1. The ‘K’ in K1 stands for Kepler. That’s the parallel processing GPU architecture found in the world’s most powerful supercomputers.

As a result, Tegra K1 offers visual and parallel computing capabilities never seen in mobile devices before. Tegra K1 supports the most advanced graphics technologies – including OpenGL 4.4, OpenGL ES 3.1, and DX12.

Those are the same standards used in PCs and next-gen consoles. That means developers can bring the latest games to mobile devices. Tegra K1 already runs Unreal Engine 4, the world’s most advanced game engine. So, games with intense graphics, like Trine 2, play flawlessly.

The Mi Pad will be available in China starting in June as an open beta – select fans will get the option to go hands-on with pre-production units. It will retail for around $240 (16 GB) and $270 (64 GB).

Xiaomi is known for selling their hardware at BOM cost, so I don't know what type of pricing we'll see on other Tegra K1 devices. I could imagine a Tegra K1 based NVIDIA Shield 2 selling for around $300 USD.

Nvidia Shield 2 is going to destroy the Vita.

I know people will laugh but Mobile Devices already have a great selection of games as I've found out recently. Games like TDKR, Rayman, The Gangstar series, GTA Series, Spider Man Series, N.O.V.A, Modern Combat, the list literally could go on and on. Mobile is becoming an incredibly rich gaming field and it's selections are certainly better than the PSV.

As a fan of mobile gaming, you just listed some pretty lackluster reasons to get into mobile gaming.

Mobile Socs becoming quite dam powerful.. End of this year 64-bit ArmV8 SoCs with ARM A57 cores which should be pretty dam burly

K1 gpu has about 350 gigaflops of power, by next year mobile socs will have around 700 gigaflops power even more possibly, year after over 1 teraflop of power in a MOBILE GPU THAT IS RIDICULOUS....

Ps4/xbox one will be surpassed by mobile in 3 years in performance no less then 3 years though,

Looking forward to Apples A8 SoC this year should be top 2 SoCs to come out this year IMO Apple usually always has a 2x cpu & gpu performance improvement give or take A8 gpu will have almost same performance as k1 maybe even a littttle better, Apple A8 cpu cores will be ridiculously good their A7 cores now are already core for core faster then Snapdragon 800/801 Cores and those are clocked at 2.3 ghz-2.5 ghz each as opposed to 1.3 ghz per core for the A7

805 will most likely beat A7 core performance Krait 450

Really looking forward to Apples A8 soc should be a real powerhouse, the Snapdragon 810 is gonna be really beast too

Agree, most of those games are pretty terrible.

I thought mobile gaming was where I would lay down most of my time and money, but portable platforms like the 3ds and Vita deliver far better experiences. You seriously aren't going to find games of such high quality like Fire Emblem, Killzone Mercenary, Persona 4G, or Super Mario 3D land on a mobile device for only 7$.

So far the device will be launching primarily in China / Asia. Xiaomi has not yet made the jump into the EU and NA markets, but their devices can still be imported.

Hopefully we'll see some more Tegra K1 news at Computex 2014 (June 3 - 7).

If a game can run on SteamOS, it can be easily ported over to Tegra K1. We're not dealing with "mobile first" hardware such as Tegra 4.

Tegra K1 offers the same architecture and feature support as a desktop Kepler GPU.

2015 should be a very interesting year. Right now, Tegra K1 uses Kepler on a 28nm process. Maxwell on 28nm is ~33% more efficient than Kepler on 28nm. Next year, NVIDIA will be using Maxwell cores on a 20nm process.

Imagination's PowerVR 6XT series GPU, that Apple will most likely use in their A8 SoC, can only support OpenGL 3.x and Direct3D 11 feature level 10_0. NVIDIA's Tegra K1 supports OpenGL 4.4 and Direct3D 12 feature level 12_0.

This is why we night have the last gen of consoles. By the end of the next console generations is going to be pointless. Just plug in the power to my tablet and hook upto the tv.

No, the NVIDIA Shield does not use this "shit". Considering the thread title is "1st Tegra K1 Device Announced", you could have figured that out.

True, but developers such as Valve and Epic have expressed interest. We've already seen Serious Sam 3 (Croteam) and Trine 2 (Frozenbyte) on the K1 reference tablet. The fact games can be ported so easily works in NVIDIA's favour. Porting games to Tegra 4 is a hassle.

Ram is understandable, the Tegra K1 reference device was using 4 GB LPDDR3. Of course adding additional ram might disrupt the low price.

Considering you can add up to 128 GB via microSD, I don't see the storage as much of an issue,

Never cared much for camera's on a tablet.

The weight is only 0.06 lbs (29 g) more than the iPad Mini Retina. Although, if you're used to using a Nexus 7 (290 g), then it might feel a tiny bit heavier (0.15 lbs difference).

I said about a year ago that within a year you'd be able to get a tablet thats more powerful than a PS3 and everyone was like "NOOO WAYYYYY MANNNN THATS LIKE IN 5 YEARS TIME ATLEAST!!!" I'll say it again now, I give it 3 years and we will be able to buy a tablet that is more powerful than the PS4 and Xboxone.
