The local state high school sports folks here have instituted some mercy rules. They already had one for hockey but now put one in for basketball and football. Basically if someone is up by 35 in the 4th quarter of a football game or with 9:00 left in basketball the game clock will continue to run regardless of game the usual game clock stoppages and such.

What do you think of these mercy rules?

I think this one is a fairly good compromise. The game doesn't just end, it still goes on, but they also get the inevitable over with.

I think that's a good idea. I would be against ending the game prematurely if someone is up big time, b/c I think it allows both teams to work on things for the next game and you dont want them to give up. But at the same time, no need to delay the inevitable.

That's the same with the high scools in my area. Fine with me.

Although, when it comes to the pros, there should be no mercy rule, I support scoring as many points as you can; I don't care if people think you're running up the score or not, get as many points as you can.

Amature sports I agree with this. Sometimes games like this get out of hand, and it is nice to get it over with a little quicker.

When it comes to professional sports however, I don't think this would be a good idea. People pay big money to see these games, and they should see the whole game.

The mercy rule is more embarassing than getting blown out.

The teams I've see that could use it are teams that rarely (if ever) win in the first place. Embarrassing is nothing new to them.

My friend implements his own mercy rule in Madden. He usually ends our game together before the half when I'm up by 35 :P
