Issue with my PS3 Performance (please help)

It doesn't sound like a heat-related problem, although keeping good airspace all around and also underneath the PS3 - I put two DVD cases/game cases under each side, so that there's as much of the bottom of the console exposed to flowing air as possible, so there's a "tunnel" from front to back. Cleaning regularly with a regular household VACUUM applied to the ports of the machine (no opening the unit housing neccesary), not compressed air, as blowing it into the vents just pushes the dust/fuzz/etc further into the unit, is an excellent habit to get into, by the way. So you done-good there.

I'm not a console expert - But honestly, this doesn't sound like a temperature problem. How old is the console, and did you buy it new or used? Do you have pets in your house (as lodged pet hair could be flickering over the laser lens causing it to sporadically hiccup)?And does this happen with all your games, or just "Oblivion"? And have you downloaded all patches for the game?

As much info on the unit's history as you can post will aid us in finding an answer for you. Hang in there, this forum has some really knowledgeable gurus who I'm sure can set you right or get you closer to a solution!

im having this problem with Oblivion (IT IS A used game, recently PURCHASED. The blueray seems to be in perfect condition) and with dark souls(i know this game is known with a lot of fps issues but i have more than USUAL).

When oblivion was lagging i turn off the console and i cleared the dust, i noticed that my PS3 was hot on the back and when i try the game again after doing this the game plays well and i have no framerate issues. also this games (not the same bluerays but this games) run better on the ps3 of two of my friends. i will try that of putting 4 cases in the bottom. do you think i should buy a usb fan or a cooler system for my ps3?matius88

(Forgive my correction of some of your English, but it will help others here to read your post and respond more accurately.)

OK... So if I understand you correctly -

1. - You have a PS3 which is 1 year old, and you purchased it new.

2. - 3 of your friends also own "Oblivion", and the copies they own run well on their consoles, but the copy you bought is not running well on your console.

3. - You also have more framerate problems on "Dark Souls" than is usual for the game.

4. - When you turn your console off and then on again, you notice that "Oblivion" runs better for some time.

5. - You do not notice any of these problems with games you own except "Oblivion" & "Dark Souls".

I don't know for certain if this is the problem you are having, I am simply stating a theory, but I believe you may be having a fairly common Bethesda game issue on PS3. By turning off your console for about 30 seconds or so, you clear out the memory of the machine, and when you turn it back on, you have essentially "refreshed" your console's brain for awhile. Your friends are getting lucky. Some PS3 owners have no trouble with Bethesda games, and others are in Hell when trying to play them.

Bethesda (who makes "Oblivion", "FallOut 3", and "Skyrim") is known for games where, when the save file gets larger, they start acting up in the ways you are describing on your console. They have not found a way to correct this issue effectively, so Bethesda games are known for running poorly on PS3. And every user's experience is fairly unique which is part of the problem for them to be able to find a universal fix for their games on PS3. XB360 owners have far less in the way of problems when playing those games.

As to why you are having greater-than-usual framerate issues with "Dark Souls", I have no idea.

On PS3 getting warm/hot - I would not worry too much about the temperature of the unit on the back. That is where the fan blows out, and so it's going to feel a little warmer there. A USB cooling pad is not a bad idea, especially if you live in a more tropical or in-general warmer part of the world (I live in Wisconsin, USA, so I get very hot months and VERY cold months in even amounts :P ), and allowing as much airspace around the console as you can is always a good idea no matter where you live.

(My DVD cases are under the outside edges - where the little rubber feet are - of the right and left sides of the console, so that there is as much of the underside of the machine exposed as possible. This seems to keep the rest of the machine cooler than it would if the machine were just sitting on a hard surface.)

If you really want to cool the console, you can put a small desk fan in front of it, blowing from the front over the machine - NOT in the back, as that is where the internal fan exhaust is blowing OUT, and you don't want that warm air being blown back IN the machine.

BUT - I don't think this is a problem caused by heat. I think it is a memory issue like I described above.Try clearing the PS3 brains by shutting off the console for around 30 seconds or so, and turning it back on again. "Skyrim" players have reported having to reset their machines like this after a few hours of playing in order to avoid freezes or framerate issues.

Some other fixes I have come across via Google, are to delete all the game data (NOT YOUR SAVE, but patches and other installed data associated with the game or games), and re-load the game fresh. It may be that you are having issues of that sort - Again, Bethesda games on PS3 are KNOWN to be problematic.

I would start with re-installing the games. If you are still having problems, take your copy of the game to one of your friend's machine which is not having trouble, and try playing your disc in their machine to see if it is a disc-based problem (though I doubt it will be).

Try some of these things, and get back to this thread with the results.
