One of the edges Sonic has on other franchises is the focus on Music. Not content to limit itself to blips, beeps, and instrumentals, SEGA has brought in many bands over the years to do Songs for the levels or just as a theme for the game itself.

Featuring talents from a 16-bit Michael Jackson all the way to, um, Crush 40. And even if the recent songs arent the best, most still beat out the likes of Smash Mouth, Rebecca Black, and other Singers-that-must-never-be-mentioned-again.

I'm sure though that you can choose better, so the question is this. What songs (from any band or genre) would you listen to when playing a Sonic game? You can even choose a specific game or level that the song would work best for.

I always did place Foo Fighters' "Monkey Wrench" as a replacement to "Escape From the City" to surprisingly decent effect.

I find that the Egg Dragoon fight goes really well with Metallica's King Nothing.

This is totally a topic for me. In fact, back when I cared about Pendulum (2 years ago wow), I made a video replacing some music in Sonic CD with tracks from their 3rd album, and I've thought about trying to do that with different games whose BGM I can mute since then, but I don't have a good capture card. That music replacement worked well for the most part imo. The Perfect High by The Qemists works as some proper intense boss music (after the intro of course, also I recommend 720p or maybe 480p for sound quality), and Ya Mama by Fatboy Slim (I don't think a proper album version is on youtube :( but the music video is) should be the Sonic Rush Adventure boss music.

This song makes me think of Shadow, before the emo BS from his own game.

I dunno why. Probably just the riff.

First time I heard this, I thought of Sonic. It's so fitting and stuff.

For those who fear links, it's "It's Not My Time" by 3 Doors Down.

Scorchio by Bond An uptempo, thematic groove. Oh, and no lyrics, just strings. :)

Okay i'm trying to not post a huge list of songs, but ynow what, screw it! :P

Not going to post links since I assume everyone has a Youtube window open by now.

      1. Workin day and night - Michael Jackson (City levels)

      2. Secret Messages - ELO (Chrome Gadget Zone, Sonic 3)

      3. Unbreakable - Michael Jackson (Works as a theme for Knuckles or Shadow)

      4. Rio - Duran Duran (Tropical levels)

      5. Eldorado (finale) - ELO (any climactic boss fight)

A cookie to anyone who checks off this list.

This is also me. The Prodigy - Wind it Up - I tried this with Empire City day in Unleashed HD. It worked okay. Genetic Bros - Build - I've always thought this could work well with Planet Wisp, but I haven't tried it. The Prodigy - Fuel My Fire - Despite the lyrics, this somehow worked well with Rooftop Run day in Unleashed HD Oh man, I bet there's any number of dnb tracks in my collection that I could pass off as fitting Sonic... Apart from saying all the darkstep fits bosses for massive intensity, it's difficult to really do. Compared to Aquarium Park's music, I suppose most of them just don't have such an upfront and dynamic main theme (and a specific song that does have those probably sounds too serious). And they have quiet parts in the middle and then generally repeat blah blah. Aw well, I'll still try. You could cut parts out to make them more suited to Sonic too. London Elektricity - Power Ballads - Don't really know a specific fitting place, but it sounds like it could work for a jungle/forest level, especially as it mentions "the jungle." Great track as well

Heh. Pandora gave me a good one today. I mean, if you define "Shadow the Hedgehog" related responses to this question as good. Invaders Must Die - The Prodigy

"Shadow the Hedgehog" relatedsonicphc
More like Serial Thrilla And I know a Blaze fan who found World's on Fire (same album as Invaders) when looking for fire related songs for her. OR if you don't want MOAR PRODIGY... well, let's say Metrik - Sunset 2011 for something.

funny how Shadow keeps popping up yet on SA2 when you have the Shadow menu theme activated, if you click on Music he says "Not interested".

Anyways, Don't Stop me now by Queen is a perfect theme for Sonic.

Edit: Scratch that, Speed Demon by Michael Jackson will always, always be Sonic's theme.

Circus Maximus - Arrival of Love

Going specifically on the merits of the music itself. Feel free to discard the lyrics (however impeccably they may be delivered, Mike Eriksen is a god amongst singers)

"Heart Of The Sunrise" by Yes, particulary in one of the more industrial or city based stages.
