Sonic Drift and Sonic R were bad NOT because Sonic was doing a racing/Mario Kart knockoff but because they controlled like ass and the later was so short and shallow, I'm amazed people paid $50 for it.
Sonic Riders wasn't bad so much because Sonic was riding a hoverboard but due to a steep learning curve, useless story mode and a little too much focus on winning through luck.
But honestly immediately complaining about Sonic in a racing game doing something other than running is like saying Mario Kart sucks because Mario's not jumping.
I don't think Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing will be that bad.
Alright I feel that Sonic R had a lot of potential in being a great racing game. I never really got into the Riders and I hated the Drifts, but maybe because it was my first Sonic game that I owned for myself, I always enjoyed Sonic R. Sure it only had 5 tracks and was really easy to beat, but it had a lot of thing in it that if you look past the poor controls and shortness (but look at it this way most of your newer games have poor controls and some are also really short.)
Now I think you could make a good, if not great, racing game from what Sonic R had. First off add more tracks. But do what they are doing in All-Star Racing and remake stages from other Sonic games. Green Hill Zone, Radical Highway, Casino Night Zone, ect. Make about 16 to 20 tracks from different Sonic levels. Make some of these unlock-able too.
Next add in more characters to unlock. Throw in Blaze, Shade, Shadow I guess, and more, but also keep almost everyone that was in the first one. (They can throw out RoboEgg and they can keep out Big.) Make it so you start off with a few people and then make the rest unlock-able after doing something. I think they should keep in the tokens, but they don't have to. And then hide the Emeralds on a few of the tracks, some of the ones you have to unlock.
Then they should add items to the races. Much to what All-Stars is doing. They could even add in Specials too for all I care.
Once that's all said and done add in online to the game. Not only should you be able to race one another, but add in some of the multiplayer features to it too. Add in that tag game for all I care. Then get some leader boards going on and ghosts from the leaders or even your friends.
I'll stop now only because I'm hungry...

you just have such a great idea, remembers me of a project of a Sonic racing games, you want even to return the murderer TD? Just kidding, I don't believe in urban legends.
I think Sonic should move in the racing direction. After all, one of the main things fans want from Sonic is more speed based gameplay. So, have the focus being a racing game (foot or vehicle, doesn't really matter). I remember Sonic Adventure 2 had racing, and I'd always play as Metal Sonic because I hadn't seen him since S3&K.Â
In fact, I think a strong Sonic game would involve a non-racing story, with multiplayer racing elements. After all, games like Rush have that kind of element, and I have yet to see anyone complain about them. And who knows? Maybe you could have both vehicles and non-vehicles. Say, Sonic runs on his feet, while Tails flys in a mini version of the Tornadoe (or something that would actually work). Or perhaps have everyone run on feet, and then have some sort of bonus unlockable "You've unlocked Sonic with a Skateboard", that way it pleases both the old fans, and the newer ones craving more "coolness".Â
Still, what do I know? I haven't even played the first Adventure :P

[QUOTE="dalejrgamer"]Or Sega should stuff them into IndyCars ( circa 1998 ), make fake tracks that resembles real-world tracks (layout-wise) and go from there.kbaily
Then you don't have a Sonic racing game, you have a NASCAR game. DUH!
oh...
do they feature BIG CRASH?!?!?! like this?
