Not long enough to be a front page rant, so I'll do like Kbaily and create a thread about it here. Any time Sega publishes a game that involves Sonic racing in any way, shape, or form, the question that invariably comes up is: "Why would Sonic race on a _____ when he can obviously run faster on foot?" This is a question that has managed to plague both fans and non-fans alike. I would like to present the simple answer here and now: He's rather ride the vehicle. Now, for those of you who don't see where I'm going with this already, you're question is probably now "Why would Sonic want to ride on a _____ when he can obviously run faster on foot?" Well, it's simply a matter of the personality traits Sonic is written with. They are as follows: 1. Sonic is "way past cool," or at least that's how he's been publicized. Now, running fast is cool, but isn't riding a futuristic hoverboard just that much cooler? Sonic does cool things for the sake of them being cool. When I was much younger, I had a kids chapter book called "Sonic X-TREME." The premise was that Sonic was doing extreme sports because they were cool. The rest of the plot involved Robotnik challenging him to 5 extreme sports contests (and cheating at every turn). Thus, Sonic does non-running things because he finds them fun and cool. 2. Sonic is competitive. Sure, he could run faster than that car, but that would defeat the purpose of, say, a CAR RACE. If he uses his super-speed in a non-foot race, it's cheating, and there's no satisfaction in winning, and your opponents can claim that you're win wasn't valid. Sonic plays fair, because otherwise he can't claim the best at "______ Racing," and being the best is Sonic's Ultimate goal, right? So there's my argument. Sonic is not out of place in a car or on a hoverboard, or any other vehicle. Discuss!

Sonic Drift and Sonic R were bad NOT because Sonic was doing a racing/Mario Kart knockoff but because they controlled like ass and the later was so short and shallow, I'm amazed people paid $50 for it.

Sonic Riders wasn't bad so much because Sonic was riding a hoverboard but due to a steep learning curve, useless story mode and a little too much focus on winning through luck.

But honestly immediately complaining about Sonic in a racing game doing something other than running is like saying Mario Kart sucks because Mario's not jumping.

I don't think Sonic and Sega All Stars Racing will be that bad.

I don't think they are bad games because Sonic is driving a car its the controls and lastability and difficultly in games what makes them worth playing. Sonic R just sucked and lacked skill and Sonic Drift was just unplayable.

Alright I feel that Sonic R had a lot of potential in being a great racing game. I never really got into the Riders and I hated the Drifts, but maybe because it was my first Sonic game that I owned for myself, I always enjoyed Sonic R. Sure it only had 5 tracks and was really easy to beat, but it had a lot of thing in it that if you look past the poor controls and shortness (but look at it this way most of your newer games have poor controls and some are also really short.)

Now I think you could make a good, if not great, racing game from what Sonic R had. First off add more tracks. But do what they are doing in All-Star Racing and remake stages from other Sonic games. Green Hill Zone, Radical Highway, Casino Night Zone, ect. Make about 16 to 20 tracks from different Sonic levels. Make some of these unlock-able too.

Next add in more characters to unlock. Throw in Blaze, Shade, Shadow I guess, and more, but also keep almost everyone that was in the first one. (They can throw out RoboEgg and they can keep out Big.) Make it so you start off with a few people and then make the rest unlock-able after doing something. I think they should keep in the tokens, but they don't have to. And then hide the Emeralds on a few of the tracks, some of the ones you have to unlock.

Then they should add items to the races. Much to what All-Stars is doing. They could even add in Specials too for all I care.

Once that's all said and done add in online to the game. Not only should you be able to race one another, but add in some of the multiplayer features to it too. Add in that tag game for all I care. Then get some leader boards going on and ghosts from the leaders or even your friends.

I'll stop now only because I'm hungry...

All Stars Racing maybe good and I will try it if a friend buy it, but I don't want to be like other fans that dissapoints with a game and say they won't buy a new sonic game ever again and the cycle repits, I want to keep my promise.

As long as the non-foot-racing-concept's fun and fast, I'm cool with it. We wouldn't have Sonic Riders otherwise, and I would be unable to continually annoy ppl about how enjoyable said game really is. :)

I think Sonic should move in the racing direction.  After all, one of the main things fans want from Sonic is more speed based gameplay.  So, have the focus being a racing game (foot or vehicle, doesn't really matter).  I remember Sonic Adventure 2 had racing, and I'd always play as Metal Sonic because I hadn't seen him since S3&K.

In fact, I think a strong Sonic game would involve a non-racing story, with multiplayer racing elements.  After all, games like Rush have that kind of element, and I have yet to see anyone complain about them.  And who knows? Maybe you could have both vehicles and non-vehicles.  Say, Sonic runs on his feet, while Tails flys in a mini version of the Tornadoe (or something that would actually work).  Or perhaps have everyone run on feet, and then have some sort of bonus unlockable "You've unlocked Sonic with a Skateboard", that way it pleases both the old fans, and the newer ones craving more "coolness".

Still, what do I know?  I haven't even played the first Adventure :P

Sonic Riders looked like a great concept but they messed it up so bad TWICE!!! that I don't want to see another attempt at it. They only needed to copy WipeOut for it to work and they didn't.

Or Sega should stuff them into IndyCars ( circa 1998 ), make fake tracks that resembles real-world tracks (layout-wise) and go from there.

That's not NASCAR, that's formula one racing.

NASCAR is the one that features more traditional looking cars covered in advertisements going around in a circle 500 times (see the Pixar movie Cars) that rednecks like watching, but it also as cool crashes.
