I just got a Sega Dreamcast, first time owning one (I was a Nintendo kid). Atm I've started through Skies of Arcadia and have Shenmue lined up next, but was hoping for some suggestions on some of the other good games on the system. Thanks!

Dreamcast had really good quality of games despite it's short lifespan. But anyways, it's never too late to play Dreamcast so here's my game list for Dreamcast:

  1. Shenmue/2
  2. Power Stone [Power Stone 2 wasn't that good but it did kinda set the motion as a starting point for Super Smash Bros.]
  3. Sonic Adventure 2
  4. Jet Grind Radio
  5. Marvel vs Capcom 2 [if your interested on the Dreamcast version]
  6. Gundam Side Story: 0079: Rise from the Ashes
  7. Crazy Taxi/2

I didn't have that many Dreamcast games back then but the one's I listed I still own and play every now and then but I did play other DC games when Blockbusters was still a thing when I was renting games.

If you want Shenmue 2 in english you'll have to import the PAL version of the game, or buy the OG Xbox version. It was never released in the US for the Dreamcast.

I'll toss Project Justice, E.G.G. Elemental Gimmick Gear, and Evolution 1 & 2 to the list.

If you want a weird puzzler check out Wetrix. Super fun. Could also grab Legacy of Kain if you don't have that on another system, RE: Code Veronica, and if you want a gorgeous and unique (but hard hard) game, check out Ecco The Dolphin

I'll add some that haven't been mentioned:

Toy commander

Virtua tennis 1 and 2

Soul calibur

Headhunter

Fire Pro Wrestling D

Rez

Also, someone mentioned Grandia. It's sequel is well worth owning.

Power Stone 1/2 are a must. First one is a bit more focused and probably a bit better, but 2 has 4-player.

Virtua Tennis, I don't even like sports games but this is great

Crazy Taxi

Jet Grind Radio

Giga Wing 2. Ikaruga is a bit better, but no shmup is more chaotic than Giga Wing 2. Plus it got a NA release.

Propeller Arena, this was never officially released but the rom is available online if you get a program that can burn Dreamcast games.

I believe RE3 was on the DC as well, not sure if it had any graphical upgrade over the PS1 version.

Make sure to get the vibration thing too. Code Veronica really used it well.

The only thing I didn't see anyone mention is the early version of my favorite game

phantasy star online( the PC version is still up and probably the best version, if you want to try it there is always phantasystaronline.net)

Fur Fighters.

True, it's also on the PS2 and PC. But the DC version was first.

I'd recommend checking out http://www.racketboy.com/retro/sega/dreamcast if you want an in depth list on the best Dreamcast (or any really any other system) games.

@mdk12345: actually, this is illegal - at least in many countries, and discussion of this sort is against the posting guidelines:

"Don't discuss any illegal activities. (ROMs, Emulators, Homebrew, etc)."

Virtua Tennis was a great game, but I never got to play Seaman... It was pretty late in the Dreamcast life and I think I had moved to PS2 at that point...

I quite liked Shadowman and Soul Reaver. Capcom Vs SNK is a top game. Tempers can get freyed when three of you gang up on one person in Chu Chu Rocket.

quick shout out for Outtrigger - very slick arcade shooter for a quick blasting session. Terribly one dimensional however. Not sure if it came out on other consoles, Dreamcast was my only experience/knowledge of it existing and it was an arcade port iirc

I used to love this one and Shenmue 2 but spent a lot of time on the in-game Sega games! Great days!

@ewrankend: Here's hoping you get that bad boy. As for why the Dreamcast failed, while there was still a dedicated fanbase, Sega had poisoned the well with most fans with their scattershot releases prior, and said scattershot releases also drained Sega's coffers as part of the civil war between the western and Japanese branches of the company. Had they had a unified vision and the patience to actually stick to the Saturn or 32X (they admittedly did try with the Sega CD), things might not have gone SO badly.
