Can Trump? Yes.

Should Trump? No.

Using the apparatus of the executive branch to harass and persecute your political opponents is a hallmark of tyranny. We've had 8 years of that kind of crap. Let's not continue it.

If a president does use the IRS to target political opponents, he's guaranteed to be impeached.

This thread's premise is off from the very start lol Obama never targeted anyone and the FBI investigated and found no wrong-doing.

If no wrong doing was found, then why did courts say otherwise? As it is, no, he cannot so such.

The FBI never said they found no wrong doing only that they were not going to prosecute an since the IRS has even admitted to targeting conservative groups. I have little doubt the Obama Whitehouse was at least aware of these activities if not directly involved.

Did you read your link? It says.........confirming long-standing accusations by some conservatives that their applications for tax-exempt status were being improperly delayed and scrutinized.

That's not what you said in your OP. Can you stick to the facts or are you going to spin like the Republicans.

depends. if the group is publicly espousing the elimination of taxation while applying for tax-free status.... they might deserve a little more scrutiny.

it's like if a someone who hangs out on nambla message boards is applying to be a cub scout leader.... you might want to give them a second look.

This whole argument hinges on the idea that the Tea Party is not a primarily political organisation. If a group that spends a lot of it's time and money lobbying, applies for tax-exempt status, then yes, they should be scrutinized thoroughly. Right or left leaning.

"As a result, the IRS traditionally has permitted organizations described in IRC 501(c)(4) to engage in lobbying and political campaign activities if those activities are not the organization's primary activity".
