In most if not all games now, weget the Press start screen before we have to access the main menu on games. not sure if there is a very obvious reason i dont know about or if it has been asked and just never noticed it before. what do you all think?

sometimes i think its meant to make your controller is connected because sometimes for me my controllers shuts off at times, i dont know why, but or it maybe that there is a cheat before pressing start.. a lot like the old games do

It's a conspiracy to drain the powah from your controller....one unnecessary press at a time. :P

Its so the game can recognize which controller the player is using. Lets say you start up a single player game and have four controllers plugged in, pressing start lets you choose which controller to use instead of having to find the correct one.

The problem is when they show your scoresheet at the end of a golf game for five seconds and then switch to an idiotic animation of your character dancing with "press start" flashing...

To be honest, I think it is redundant nowadays. Simply convention....

Definitely. But answering OP's question it has just become a staple in gaming. People who make them unique (aka infamous and God of War) are remembered for them.

Maximus923

DVDs have menus so that audio setup, special content and the video itself can be organized into separate places. Books have tables of content to help the reader find exactly what they're looking for and/or where they left off.

I believe it comes from arcade machines. They all have start menu's I believe to attract people's attention to the game. It's like the cover of a book. You don't just make books without covers, only showing the contents of the book. You have the cover to show you what you are about to read/play and to let your imagination run wild as to what lies within the pages. Of course for console games you have the case, but that's not so for arcade machines. I believe it then just came to consoles as a sort of tradition. I'm not positive on all of this, but I do remember watching something about it coming from arcade machines.

I agree that it is done more for style and tradition than function.

To make things organized. Imagine popping a disc in and suddenly monsters start attacking or a cutscene executes. I guess it's for letting the player get ready, and also probably technical stuff, like processing and such.

I'm not sure but I seem to remember GTA4 not having a title screen and going right into the game. However there is that long loading sequence at the beginning. It may be some background loading that takes a split second to process. And thank you people who put the hammer down on the "why is there a DVD menu" comment.

Exactly. The same reason why the title of a movie appears at the beginning. The producers don't want their customers go like "What did I just have fun with? Well, who cares..."
