In most if not all games now, weget the Press start screen before we have to access the main menu on games. not sure if there is a very obvious reason i dont know about or if it has been asked and just never noticed it before. what do you all think?

It is pretty common, but pressing start in inFAMOUS was VERY cool to watch.

true I remember that. I was quite impressed. Best use of "press start" ever
Its so the game can recognize which controller the player is using. Lets say you start up a single player game and have four controllers plugged in, pressing start lets you choose which controller to use instead of having to find the correct one.
this.. i loved the start screen of the first god of war.. :3 "the gods of olympus has abandoned me" and then he jumps off the cliff. XD.. i was hooked back then.I thinks its just tradition.

Definitely. But answering OP's question it has just become a staple in gaming. People who make them unique (aka infamous and God of War) are remembered for them. Why do DVD's have DVD menus? Why do books have a table of contents?
Maximus923
DVDs have menus so that audio setup, special content and the video itself can be organized into separate places. Books have tables of content to help the reader find exactly what they're looking for and/or where they left off.

Can you refresh my mind? I got the platinum trophy in Infamous and I can't remember, lol.
Resident Evil has a very cool screen. After pressing start it says "RESIDENT EVIL 4, 5" or whatever the number was :) tommyasYeah I love this, it's always the same guy....Resident Evil...2!!!(the controller vibrates)...I almost peed myself when that happened the first time.

I agree that it is done more for style and tradition than function.
