It allows your TV to utilize its highest definition capabilities with the games/movies you play and watch aposed to using regular AVI cables. Im not sure on all the specifics but HDMI allows full usage of what your Hi-Def TV has to offer. Its worth the purchase once you plug that cable in from your PS3 to your TV you'll notice a tremendous difference in color and contrast.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head. If your tv supports HDMI, thats definitely the way to go. Also, sound can be done through HDMI cables, no more right/left, red/white audio cables!
