Its an alien plot to take over the world.  They make it look like you have to "activate" your machine to get some cool things, but what it really does is activate that 8th SPU that the PS3 does not use, thereby making the Cell CPU sentient.  World domination is next.

That is the main reason the PS3 only uses 7 SPUs on the Cell CPU.....national security

If you would have activated it when you got it, you could have actually gotten an email for the Home beta.  Just do it, maybe you can get into the larget beta in August.  I got an email and Im sure activating it was part of it.

My guess is that it officially tells Sony this person has a PS3 and will be available for beta invites.

I remember for PS2 you had to register you PS2 to be able to get beta invites perhaps this activation thing is so they can send things directly to your PS3 since PS3 has HDD standard unlike PS2.

I activated mine the day I got it and yet I got no e-mail for the invite, and I'm a member of the GAP. Somethings I guess are just a mystery...

You would still have needed to actually sign up for the Beta. And then that was a random selection I believe because not everyone who signed up for it got it. Could be wrong though. Im leaning towards the whole alien plot thing myself.

it activates your machine so that when sony or its partners search for systems/people to test software on or offer things like Home beta your system shows up. you don't lose anything by not activating. i've heard some people say they got emails about demos and trailers coming up but who knows. you don't lose anything if you don't. but if you do activate you get invites to try out new software and surveys about upgrades (like the virtual keyboard instead of the phone multi-tap thing before 1.60).

Yeah I know the invite was sent out at random but I believe I can be a little miffed at not getting an invitation. I'm sure quite a few others are too!

NOOOOO! You have approximately 2 minutes and 37 seconds to get out of your house before the hidden bomb inside your PS3 goes off!

You have exactly until the next MS online update to sell your 360 before it overheats, melts your Wii and burns a whole in Earth's crust.

That doesnt make any sense.  I've never activated mine and I download everything off the PS Store, game demos, Blu-Ray trailers, Box Office trailers, etc.  I even purchased MKII when it came out a few weeks ago.
