I was just playing a game and then I quit it and I notice my demo's wouldn't show up and so i turned it off

When I turned it back on it said it needs to rebuild hard disk database

I did it since i had no other choice and everything was fine and back to normal

but didn anyone else have this happen to them? y did it need to 'rebuild hard disk database"?

Did you by chance ever turn it off if it was saving or loading, my first guess would be that some data became corrupted so it tried to repair it in which it was successful.

Other wise as I say when i have to go through testing software just a weird anomaly and probably doesn't have a reason.

I had the same thing happen to me a couple of months ago. I called Sony and the guy said it was most likely due to corrupted data. Its nothing to worry about. When it rebuilds itself, it just deletes the corrupt data and makes sure all the other data is fine.

it happened to me like last month, nothing was deleted apart from my PSN messages

i googled it and on a few sites, its apparently the PS3's version of a hard disk clean up. its supposed to happen around 8 months to a year after the console was built.

i dunno if that 100% accurate but thats what a few sites were saying :)

It just happened to me. after 3 months of owning the console. the problem in mine is the message to rebuild comes up i press 'x' it resets and the background wallpaper comes up and there are no icons. i figured id leave it on to see if anything happened. So far its been on 2 1/2 hours just like that. Any suggestions?

I saw this in the Playstation forums: "call SCEA, sounds like the database file which keeps track of your file locations is writen on a damage sector of the hard drive indicating hard drive failure and a need of a replacement."

From: http://boardsus.playstation.com/playstation/board/message?board.id=ps3&thread.id=2633947

Did you at least backup your data? :c

Actually I went to the safe menu by holding the power button for a long time and I pressed reset PS3 and I can play it again! The only thing is, it erased all my data, which really sucks.
