get atleast a B on the level. to unlock new characters you must get an A, which is 40,000 for single, 80,000 for duo. I don't know how many points you need for a B, it's probably 20,000.
I am only on chapter 3-2 and there have already been at least 3 or 4 boss fights. None of them have been too terribly difficult. In fact, I have only died once and it was pretty darn cheap (not a boss fight but it happened in chapter 3-1 but I won't give any details just in case it would be considered a spoiler).
