this is not another 'can i play region 1 on ps3' question, rather the opposite. I have recently bought a UK ps3 40gb and it only plays region1 dvd/ region a blu ray. is this a software error? Does anyone need to know if I have to download anything to fix it?
Oh, then that is weird. Only thing I can think of is that it's not really a UK system, or it's listed as a UK system but it isn't. I'd probably just call Sony for support or something.

You just recently said it only plays Region 1 dvd/Region A blurays....WTF? yes i know I just recently said that the system I bought is a UK system, yet it only plays region one dvds/ region B blu ray- UK system, US DVD/BD playback. thanks yokofox33 will give them a call
The simplest thing you can do to help is simply take it back to the store and ask for support. Or ask for a refund (assuming you have the receipt) and buy a different PS3.
