If you play a game with high requirements your console will heat up faster. Also, where do you live? If it's summer then this is kinda normal to happen, since all electronics overheat more in the summer. It's REALLY hot where I live this season, so I'm used to it :P

I have a 60 gig that's never shut down (on 24/7) and it never overheats without any kind of cooler. The main thing is make sure there is plenty of room for the air to flow through without any restrictions of any kind. I also found that it seems more heat is removed when the system is standing vertical. As for just a short gaming session it can cause a lot more thermal stress than anything you can do.

Vacuum your system and make sure no dust is blocking air. Also air conditioner is a good thing during the summer.

The house is a little warmer now so it will heat up faster.
