Alright, I am getting a PS3 soon, and am confused, does PS3 support PS1&2 games? I keep hearing "The 60gb does this better than the 80gb" vice versa, or "neither of them really does this...". Is the backward compatability better or worse for one of the two over all? Thank you for your time.

The only one with no PS2 backwards compatibility is the 40gb.

*sigh*

Both 60 and 80gbs are compatible with PS and PS2 games. The difference: 60gbs use the emotion engine (that's hardware that enables the PS3 to play almost every game from previous consoles), and 80gbs use emulation software, which isn't that reliable. So if you can get a 60gb, just get it.

Both models have been discontinued, btw.

So if both are discontinued, does that mean from now on no backwards compatability for new PS3 owners (myself included) ? That seems quite ... cannot find right word, but foolish comes close.

Your best option is to buy a PS2 to play PS2 games, if you ask me.

I'd just wait until MGS4 was released if I were you... that way you won't have to pay extra for the dualshock3 controller. As for compatibility.... I suggest just buying a PS2. You can live without PS3 for a long while, if you have yet to tackle the PS2 libary of games. There are more than enough games on the PS2 to hold you over. That is, if you're not drooling to play GTA4, MGS4 or something.

As for PS1 games.... the 40gig is said to play some of those, even though it can't play a single PS2 game.

US's 60gig emulation is, so far, still the best of the PS3 for backward compatibility, because it's using hardware for it's emulation. But, the newer models that use the software emulator have the possibility of someday being updated to that better than the 60gig. But I'm sure pigs will probably fly first, because, it seems, a lot of publishers just don't care whether the PS3 can play their PS2 games.

i was gonna say if u really care about playing old games on a new system see if you can ebay the original 60. i freaking love it, the emulation is on a different level comparing to newer hardware series. But than again i am sure you got a ps2 hiding somewhere so why not just use that to play PS2 games....

on a side note, i really dont see a point in this. there are so many amazing games out for PS3 that i really dont see how some of you find time to put in for PS2 games!

wait for the MGS Bundle. It comes with an 80GB PS3, rumble, and pain for 499.99. That is what I'm doing.

20GB- 99% BC, hardware included

40GB- PS1 BC, no PS2 BC

60GB- 99% BC, hardware included, IMO the best choice

80GB- around 80-90% BC, emulation

No you can't. That's been on the PS Store since December 2006, it lets PS2 game install to your HDD (if it is required).

The 'Search' is a wonderful tool that more people should use. Check out GameSpot's Tech Center as well, as it also contains some great information.

Sony has a WONDERFUL little tool that comes up when you google "PS3 Backward Compatibility". The first entry HERE will take you right to it.

Keystrokes are fun...
