What's up with most of the games released being 720p at max resolution? I understand multiplats and how they are ported blah blah blah, but I'm talking about the exclusives. I love KZ3 but, even KZ2 had 1080p upscaling.

Hard for devs to design games with that high of resolution, i suppose. OR, tv's with1080p isn't quite the norm in every household across the globe, so companies probably stillwant to appeal to everyone.
no killzone 2 didnt have 1080p , it was 1080i and frankly it looked worse on my native 1080p tv, 720 was alot better for killzone 2. and u wont see 1080p native games till next gen. this gen 720p is the mandatory res. even the other system cant do 1080p without upscale and it still looks worse lol. there are some games, like mgs4 and gt5 and black ops and so on that support and are 1080p. but like i said u wont see to much of them this genJoKeR_421black ops is below 600p! on ps3! oh and it doesnt matter if it can be upscaled or not because a game will always look better in its native resolution!

Only few arcade games are 1080p on ps3
mgs4, gt5 and black ops aren't even close being 1080p, mgs4 and black ops are even lower than 720p

Actually, while the typical PS3 resolution is 720p, it isn't mandatory. There are many games that dip under that res; for example two of the games you listed. MGS4 is actually 1024x768 native, and CoD: Black Ops is an even lower 960x544. GT5 gets closer at 1280x1080 but it's still not "full" HD. To give that some perspective 1920x1080 is ~2 million pixels, and 1280x1080 is ~1.3 million pixels which is almost half the amount.
The number of native 1920x1080 retail PS3 games is very short (Cars Mater-National, Fifa Street 3, Marvel: Ultimate Alliance, Sacred 2: Fallen Angel, Virtual Tennis 3, and World Series of Poker 2008).
Without writing volumes, the problem is the hardware. It's old and simply can't handle processing 1080p and a game like Killzone 2, or MGS4, etc. Devs have enough problems as it is now trying to deliver 720p with great visuals, without too much trickery. You definitely won't be seeing 1080p as a standard on the PS3, but it may happen with the PS4.
The only game I've ever played in 1080p, or realised I'm playing in 1080p is black ops, which eliminates the talk about cross platforms being lower res. And to be honest, if your not satisfied with 720p, your a little strange, There's not much of a difference between 720 and 1080p, not that I can see anyway.
That is a load of bull crap. I agree with the original poster. All games on the ps3 should be able to be played at 1080p. And in no way does 720p look better than 1080p, even upscaled. What the hell is wrong with your TV's. KZ3 looks awful compared to KZ2 on my tv because of the resolution restrictions.
Mod Edit: Again guys, please remember to limit discussion to the PS3, thank-you :)

Well, as has already been said, Black Ops isn't anywhere near 1080p. It's ~1.5 million pixels away to be precise.
And here's a demonstration of the difference between 720p and 1080p:
There's a definite difference in clarity here. The crucial thing here is, how much of that difference is evident when you're sitting 10 feet away from a TV? Seeing as so many people confuse low res games with being 1080p I'd have to say that the distance really negates its advantage. That, or few people are used to playing in 1080p and thus don't really understand the visual difference. I don't know.

I agreed, some people just dont know the difference, which is a good thing.[QUOTE="Nagru"]
