When I first got my PS3 I did an auto set up and noticed my PS3 was outputting in 1080i. I know my LCD is 720p native so I did it over manually and only selected 720p.

Well for some strange reason I was playing in the settings and re-did them to automatic again, but noticed something I thought was weird. When it switched to 1080i the image looked clearer and sharper. I immidiately noticed a difference in the background on the XMB screen so I played around with it with Resistance and a Harry Potter Blu-ray.

Is this just my imagination or is there a reason behind this? I thought the games were 720p native? I could swear I see a difference. I do not see the same thing when I tried to do the same thing with my 360.

Its probobly your imagination with Resistance, becuase Resistance only goes up to 720p i think. So it cant go up to 1080i. But for the XMB it is clearer with 1080i, Thats how myne is.

Thanks alot for your help. I'll just leave itat 1080i since it looks better to me. Was just curious as to why 1080i looked better on a 720p set(768p) than 720p does.

Guess it don't matter as i should have a 1080p set soon anyhow.

Now this might sound weird but when I set my display settings to 720p GT5P Demo runs I believe better then it does in 1080i, like the framerate runs smoother :?

Also when I play NCAA Football 08 on a SD TV it has noticable framerate drops, were as when Im playing it on my HDTV I dont notice any at all...

weird.

For whatever reason one of the early patches didn't display BDs in 720p, so you had to use 1080i to watch movies in HD. I completely forgot about this issue to be perfectly honest and have been using 1080i since.

Yeah its weird.. When i switch it back to 720p it seems to dull the picture, like its just less sharp it seems. The difference is barely noticeable with games but definately noticeable with Blu-rays. I have the 2.10 update or whatever the latest one is. I don't know whats up but guess i can just leave it on 1080i.

Someone from another forum I asked on replied this:

Ace_of_Sevens:Is it really a 720p set or is it 768p? If the latter, it scales material twice on 720p, but only once on 1080i.

anyone know about what hes talking about?

If you play games that can only run at 720p and you have an LCD HDTV that has a maximum resolution of 1080i, you PS3 will play that game at 720p. Blu-ray Discs will run at 1080i along with your XMB. If you play normal type DVD's, your PS3 will upscale the DVD to display it in the most highest resolution it can, so long if you set the 'DVD Upscaler' option in Settings -> DVD Settings -> Upscale DVD.
