Good news PAL PS3 owners. Backwards compatibility of PS2 games has improved with firmware 1.7. The list has now been updated.

http://faq.eu.playstation.com/bc/bcGames.htm

Some notable additions include:

Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition
Gran Turismo 4
Mercenaries
Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance
Ratchet & Clank
Ratchet & Clank 2
Ratchet Gladiator

ALSO it seems like some of the games that were previously BC now work better with this new version. With 1.6 the Prince of Persia trilogy and Resident Evil 4 were given a compatibility rating of either 1 or 2 (significant or minor issues) but now all play without any problems... according to the site :)

That list isn't complete. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night and Castlevania Chronicles isn't on that list, and they work just fine here. Also, Resident Evil 3 works too.

When I saw Gran Turismo 4 on that list it made my day, but I was celebrating to early. There are serious issues with Gran Turismo 4 on PS3 , intro movie is lagging, some flickering of unknown origin is in the upper left corner when you play the game and I was really looking to playing Gran Turismo 4 on PS3 . Hope they improve the performance in future updates.

Actually, the performance will be better on PAL versions since it's emulated.

maybe, but its way better to have a ps3 with the ps2 engine than a ps3 with software emulation. This way, I'm sure that 99% of my games work and looks like the ps2, I actualy prefer this to a minimal visual upgrade and a limated game list..

It's not at all better. Games like God of War don't work that well with the PS2 chip. When emulated on the PS3 (and GOW works flawless) it's much better on a PAL PS3. The PS3 hardware is simply more powerful, and frames won't lag behind like they sometime do on a PS2.

I have lots of games that work just fine and still not on that list. It's not a minimal list, the list is huge. The PS3 has way better backwards compatibility than the 360 for example.

They'll fix it in the next update. Ten firmware updates from now, and I bet Sony has fixed it all.
