Ok guys, my ps3 60gb is broken and is unable to be repaired. I have an extended warranty so I was covered. They decided to give me gift card for the same shop to buy a new ps3. I want to know whether I can put the hard drive from my 60gb into the new 250gb slim ps3 that I am getting. I am saying this because I dont want to lose all my game data.

You can put it in, but it's going to need formatting.

You can put your old HDD in your new PS3 but it's going to format it once you turn it on. Unless you have a back up or a way to access your data externally it's as good as gone.

How else can I access the contents of the hard drive without reformatting it? And by the way emitsu97, you have a hell of a lot of trophies!

It's basically a box that acts as an adapter so a PC or PS3 can read a HDD that's not installed on the inside.

I've seen them as cheap as $20 online. Stores would probably charge a bit more.

These. You'll need a 2.5".

They are empty external hardrive cases you can put your hardrive into, thus turning your PS3's hardrive into an external hardrive, which you can hook up to your new ps3 via usb and copy over your data (at least in theory, I've never done it)

I'd give you a link but the GS HTML police seem to have an issue with my hyperlink. Head to Tigerdirect.com and search hard drive enclosure > 2.5" Enclosure > SATA.

external enclosure is only $20, and once you have your HDD installed in it, it would work like USB flash drive.

just bring your HDD to a computer shop and ask them you want to buy a 2.5" SATA external enclosure with USB interface only (so you dont need to pay extra $ for e-sata or firewire port)

For your purposes SATA is the connection type. It's the type of "plug" needed to connect your HDD to the enclosure. If you buy a SATA External Enclosure your PS3's HDD will plug right in.

Oh thats great I shall pop into my local computer shop sometime to ask them for one. If it works like a normal usb flash drive then it should be no problem at all. Thanks again all of you. If I need more help I will send you guys a message personally.
