So my fat boy ps3 just got the yellow light of death , and I told my brother hes saying lets try to fix the console and Im like why don I just buy another system, but then he said just wait for the ps4 which may not come out for 2 years , and I have a credit card and more then enough money to buy a new one but he said dont jump on buying a new ps3 and let me try to fix a 4 year old console which we had bought ares in 2007 so it of course was bound to happen, But to be honest I have no idea what his deal is im spending "MY money" to pay for the system and just wants to try to fix the old one which is pointless and a waste of time since I heard it only will last maybe 2 months, so what do you think fix it or just replace it.

Kind of what I was thinking. If he fixes the old PS3, give it to him and buy a new one. Then play some games together in other rooms. IDK about anyone else, but I don't like split screen.

Well, if you know that your brother is good with his hands, let him fix it and see how it goes. If you get no luck, then buy a new one. If your brother sucks at fixing things, then no way. It will be a waste of time.

I'd say fix it, you might have a few more months of playing time before it YLOD again. Then get a new PS3... Or buy a new one now while in case it YLOD again...

Let him try to fix it. What's the worst that will happen - it won't work and you'll buy a new one.

If it's broken, why not let him try to fix it? If he CANNOT fix it... buying it is always an option. If you go buy one then he fixes the old one you'll be looking silly for the fact you juts wasted money on something you already have a working model of. He's obviously trying to save you some money... just accept his act of kindness.

Well seeing you are dead set on buying one without even wanting to give your brother a chance, then give your brother the broken one and buy a new one. That way if he fixes it. You both have a PS3. Me personally, I think it is stupid not to try and fix it first. But hey, it's not my money, so why should I care when others make what I would consider dumb decisions.

If you fix it right, it's a permanent fix. And it's not that hard to do either.

Give him a few weeks to fix it and then if he doesn't, go get a new one. Simple.

The heatgun fix or the reapplying of thermal paste aren't permanent fixes. There are no easy to do permanent fixes to fix the common cause of the YLOD. Depending on how well you do the job though, you could have it last anywhere between a couple of months to a year at best.

i did this to am old 40gb. worked for a month then fried again. you should give him the old ps3 and he can have a hobby while u go buy urself one. it was a great feeling when the silly thing booted up and actually worked. i had to borrow a lot of the tools from a friend luckily so i only ended up spending $23AU on isoprop alchohol and a few things, borrowed the torque screw driver, thermal paste and heat gun from friend ( i was kinda weirded out that he had all this ready...he builds PC's but the heat gun was his mum's!).

Just let him fix it since he contiues to whine about it. You can always give it to him if he fixes it. Sounds like your heart is set on purchasing another console... go with your gut.
