Hey guys, I just bought the PSP Slim Madden NFL09 limited Edition Pack, with Metallic Blue as the color. Unfortunately, the console is PSP 2001. I just wanna check:

On the day I bought my PSP, when I got home, I think I made the mistake of turning on my PSP for 1st time charging. My friend advised me to drain the battery, charge for 2hrs, and power off my PSP for 1st time charging as turning it on while charging may cause the PSP to charge longer. I wanna know about battery life.

I played Final Fantasy Crisis Core with the lowest backlight level and the volume level somewhere in the middle. Before starting the game I checked my battery level in the system settings and it stated it was still 100% with 3 full bars. So I played for around 1hr 20mins and found out that my battery had dropped to 51% with 2 bars left. I checked with my friend, he also played FF7CC for 1hr 40mins, but instead used the backlight level on the 2nd. After 1hr 40mins he checked that his battery has still 70% left and 3 full bars, which means the PSP used up only 30% for 1hr 40mins of gameplay. I played for 1hr 20mins but my battery level seems to drop too much, which I think is impossible.

I heard that the PSP uses a lot of battery but for my case, I think the battery life shouldn't drop this fast if I had charged the battery properly. U guys tell me more about battery life.

Could there be a possibility that my battery might be a fake one? Or rather, a used one? Because on the day I bought my PSP, I actually bought it a shop with bad reputation. My fault for not doing enough research and survey... Also, how do i tell a real from a fake one?

Then today [8th January 09], before playing crisis core I checked and there was 50% left. I started at about 0930am and played till around 1020am, around that time my psp screen suddenly blacked out, instead of displaying the grey screen with the battery icon with a slash and powered off when the battery's flat. When the screen blacked out if I'm not wrong I heard some sort of a slight "snapping" or "flick" sound", and I tried to power on my psp a few times but was unsucessful. Then I plugged in my ac adapter and had it recharged, the orange light was there as per normal. I recharged for 2 hrs like I always did. Just what is wrong with my battery?

I know topics regarding battery, battery life has been posted countlessly, but as this is my first time owning a PSP, it'd be best if u guys could maybe share more detailed info on how to maintain the battery properly? Also, how do we charge our PSP system? I need a step by step guide.

Thanks :)

I have the Darth Vader PSP Slim and I can tell you that your battery life is abnormal.

However, I also see that you only usually charge it for 2 hours though. I'd recommend just letting it charge until the orange light turns off. I'm not 100% sure when that is since I usually just leave my PSP to charge overnight but I think it's somewhere in the ball park of 2 hours and a half to 3 hours.

Worse case scenario, you just buy a new battery though.

I just have a feeling that my battery could be a fake, or a used one, as I bought my psp from a shop with bad reputation. Well, still considering on getting a new one.

It's possible it could be in bad condition. But you also don't want to waste money on a new one until you're certain the battery is problematic. So I'd recommend giving it a few more tries fully charged and seeing how the battery life goes

Why would you spend that much money at a shop if you knew it had a bad reputation??? That is beyond me. I think you got exactly what you paid for.

Batteries are like drinking a soft drink. If you drink from the drink and refill it early, then you get less experience, the same for batteries, to experience the absolute MOST from a battery, then you MUST allow your battery to empty itself.

The most accurate thing you can do with testing your friend and your battery sources is running a timer and waiting until your PSP's run out of battery. The battery percentage in the Settings menu isn't much accurate at all. I, myself base my battery sources from the topright battery bars.

A battery isn't really "fake" unless you come across a plastic block that does absolutely nothing and resembles the PSP battery. A battery is usually just worse, and never fake. Meaning, it will have less battery time and will last for a shorter period of time. Just get a battery from a trusted retail source, never try to buy batteries from Ebay because 90 percent of them are Asian-Pieces-Of-Crap.

Remember, if all doesn't go as well as you thought it to be, you can always purchase another battery.

As I mentioned, I didn't do enough research and survey before buying. Before buying I stumbled upon a post on a Singapore forum, regarding the shop and had this one guy complaining about the shop online. I assured there wouldn't be any problem as my cousin bought from the same shop, without any problems. And the shop had PSP slim packages around $300+, something which was in my budget, below $400. Just my mistake for buying from the shop.

I take it as bad luck for me, and lesson learnt. And we, being human beings, makes mistakes and learn from them.

The shop is called Games Factory. Here are the links to the singapore forum:

redhotz's situation was what I exactly got...

Comrade_Buff, to put it simply, are u saying that I use a stopwatch to time, what time I start and finish playing a game? And when I finish playing a game, look out for the battery icon and check how many bars it has got left? Do u usually charge your psp battery at 1 bar, and my friend told me when the green light starts blinking fast, I can start to recharge already. Unlike nintendo ds the light goes red when the battery is low.

Also, regarding charging a brand new psp battery, how do we charge it the actual and proper way? Someone actually told me,

a) "pretty straightforward, pop in ur new psp batt, charge it for 10hrs, normally i jus leave it overnite, next day morning wake up switch off, taa daa, done"

or, advised by my friend,

b) "Play a few games, completely drain the battery before charging, and charge it for 2hrs. For a brand new battery.

Option a) or option b) seems to be the actual method? I agree with Rurounisaiyajin that my battery life is abnormal. Do we actually charge the battery for 10hrs and leave it overnight for most electronics products? Especially when we just bought it?

Lastly, after a normal 2hr charge when the orange light goes off, say, if I accidentally forget to turn off the plug and let it be for a while, does this mean the battery is overcharged? And will it cause further damage to the battery, and resulting in such weird battery life?

Sorry if I asked too many questions. Thanks (:

I have a PSP Slim and for the first 5 or 6 chargs the battery life was rubbish, but now it last for about 6 hours if I have the volume at full with the screen light at full, and 10 hours if I never have the volume on and still with the screen light at full.

If you put your PSP on charge when it still has battery power it doesn't charge properly, that is a fact. You have to completeley run out the battery.

When ur battery's flat, do u actually charge it for 2hrs, or rather, leave it overnight? When my batt's flat, I usually charge it for 2hrs and switch off the plug when the orange light goes off. Well, for now i'm gonna continue monitoring my batt and see how it goes 1st. If it worsens then i won't hesitate in getting a new battery, and right from the start i was already planning to get myself a new battery.

I think he meant after draining his battery then charging it 5-6 times. his battery started to improve by lasting longer.

i thought deep charging causes much strain on the battery and it's better to charge it from time to time. I charge my psp when its battery is down to a bar though

What I'm saying is that you should run a video and put it on the A/B feature. Charge your PSP to full battery, then run the stopwatch to see how many hours it will run for.

I usually charge my PSP overnight because I use it everyday and if the battery isn't already out, then I just play games until it does. I don't charge my PSP until it has COMPLETELY run out of all of it's battery.

Turn off your wi-fi switch if you are not using the internet. Check your battery life with it turned on, and check battery life with it off.

It is ok to play a few games, completely drain the battery and charge, leave it overnight for 10hrs?
