Like the forum topic says, I unfortunately recieved the red flashing light last night while playing LBP with my girlfriend. I was hoping my system wasn't completely fried and was possibly fixable. It seems like an overheating problem as I was able to play it for like 5 minutes this morning before the system failed on me again. I've heard that this may be a harddrive problem or a fan related problem. Anyone with legitimate advice would be well appreciated.

It sounds like an overheating/power problem.
I suppose you can try to reseat the hard drive to confirm if the aforementioned is true.

Hardly, PS3s have a very low failure rate, but like most electronics there's always a certain amount that are defective out of the box thus the manufacturer warranties.

I've had it since launch, original 60g. I've reset the hardrive and that hasn't helped. I've plugged it into a different outlet and that hasn't helped. It has had adequate airflow and it doesn't sit on the floor.

Then wouldn't there be a yellow light? After reformatting the harddrive I had no problems with the system. I reinstalled Orange Box and was able to play that for a while with no problems. I reinstalled LBP and a few minutes later the system crashed again with the flashing red light. I'm wondering if LBP has something to do with my system crashing since the first crash happened while playing LBP. I've reformatted the hardrive for a 3rd time and have not yet installed LBP. The system has been left running for about an hour now with no crash. It doesn't seem to be overheating at all, the fan is working fine. I haven't had a problem with the system since launch until installing LBP.

no YLOD is a HDD failure, RLOD is a overheating issues. as for the TC try this

Make sure to take any games or discs out of the system firs. some people say it urts the system but if you ask me there's no way it could possibly damage the system. hopefully this helps.

I just tried it, it hasn't broke down yet. It has been running fine for a little over an hour now with no problems. I haven't installed any game data on it yet. I'm about to reinstall LBP and see if that crashes the system again.

yeah i figured as much. what happened was dust coated the inside of you ps3 which was insultaing the chips and causing them to overheat. that fan test should have blown alot of dust out of the system. also just sitting at the XMB shouldn't let the system overheat. its while playing a game that it might happen. just to be on the safe side i would recommend getting one of those keyboard cleaning tools and try to blow anything else you can see out of the system.
