I bought my 60 gig PS3 in February 2007, I just froze and turned off a few minutes ago when I was playing Fallout.. Now it only turns on for a couple seconds and flashes yellow right before it turns off. I think it's dead, Sony wants about $200 to fix it, offered me a new slim for $30 less, but I love my original, and they don't make them anymore.

Thoughts?

It's the YLOD. Their are tutorials all over the internet on how to fix it. Even videos on youtube on how to do it. Or findsomeonewho has experience fixing PS3's.$200 is way to much to get it fixed in my opinion. You got nothing to lose.

Check craigslist for console repair shops, but make sure it is a shop because giving it to an independent place is stupid.

I fix and maintain PS3s for my friends privately and independently.

What's your point?

Sorry to hear that.

Anyway, what I'm doing if my 80GB BC dies is I'm going to do one of those temporary fixes and sell it. :P
Then I'll get one of the new ones, and also I will buy me a PS2 slim - for my PS2 collection. Besides, they are only $99.99. No more upscaling and smoothing, but whatever, at least I can still play my PS2 games.

I have had the YLOD a while ago... I was able to fix it by doing the same things people are doing on youtube, but believe me, it won't last too long. After I fixed it, it worked fine for two weeks and then it had the YLOD again. Even if you have fixed it hundered times, it will annouy you a lot!!! Just by the slim and save your self a lot of time and money

Yeah, I think I might just save myself $30 and trade in for the slim. You can still swap the hard drive right?A while ago I bought a $500 gig. These new ones are not BC though huh?

The slim PS3's are not BC with PS2 games, but will play PS1 games. Yes, you can swap hard drives, but there is one thing to note. If you were thinking of swaping over your hard drive to keep your save files, it won't work as simply as that. When you go to put your old hard drive into a different PS3, it'll prompt you to reformat the drive before you can use it in that PS3; which basically erases everything on it.

Basically any model can get the Ylod since it doesn't necessary means the same GPU and CPU problem. Another internal component inside the Slim can get broken and you will still receive this light.

Happened to me too, I just bought a slim. I didn't want to go through the hassle of having it fixed
