Its due to the FAT formatting of the card. Your missing space is used by the over head produced from the process of allocating and organizing data. Or atleast that's what I think. But, don't worry it is normal for a a storage device of any kind to not have as much space as advertised available to the user.

Most storage devices have this problem, although its not really a problem. My 30 gig ipod came with about 28 gig of memory. It's all due to formatting by the company and folders and what not. Completely normal.

50Mb is quite a big chunk, my 2 gig card had 1990Mb of space right away.

O well, if you fill your card up, pick up a 2 or 4 gig, they are becoming quite cheap.

Well, if I remember correctly the amount of space missing is different depending on the manufacturer of the card. But I don't think the difference would be much more then 20 MB in either direction.

Otherwise Sandisk cards tend be faster then sony cards.

I think that companies take 1000 mb as 1gb not 1024mb as 1gb
