is psp firmware region specific?

Is the official psp firmware region specific?

as it turns out i have no idea were my psp might have come form.

so could i for instance put the update form the uk website on say a us or *** psp?

its phat psp to boot.

I think the firmware is region specific because I remember when I used to update via computer and USB, the sony website would warn not to install the firmware unless you had a US psp (which I do). As far as finding out where yours comes from, I cant think of how from the top of my head. I could suggest maybe updating from network update if you have a wifi connection. It seems to find the correct version with no user input.

Each PSP has a model number. On the original PSP, it is located on the bottom in the silver section near the headphone jack. If it says PSP1001, it is a North American PSP. If it says PSP1000, it came from Japan. If you have a "Slim & Lite" it should be somewhere on the system, the only difference being that it would be PSP200x. I know that other numbers represent other regions, but I cannot confirm the correspondence of numbers to region.
