Let the noise subside first while in the main screen of the PS3. Thats what others are saying. How true is this?

It's possible, I suppose, but seems a bit overly paranoid. Interestingly, the 360 S model actually keeps the fans running for a minute after you shut it off after a long gaming session.

Well its not unheard of. Gaming makes consoles/pcs get really hot and to just turn them off instantly after a long game session will leave a ton of heat on the system without the fans pulling it off. So returning to the xmb and waiting 5 mins will give it a chance to cool down but it really isn't needed. The slim versions of both the 360 and ps3 are designed well enough that you don't need to take that precaution.

It also isnt needed for the orginal system models either really as they cool down fast after you turn them off.

Never done that. I've had a 80gig fatty with no issues since 2008, and it's on at least 4 hours min. a day.

When you turn a 360 it does leave the fan running if its warm enough, however its not the main reason why it stays on after shutdown.

The 360 goes into lower power state after you turn it off, it does some last behind the scenes maintenance before it completely shuts off (Syncing Profile, Saves and any downloads still in the queue). It will also stay on if you have a controller plugged in and in need of a charge
