Anyways I'm thinking about getting a PS3, mostly watching Blu-Ray movies for now and maybe play some games like MGS4, FFX13, Killzone 2, GT5, etc when it comes out. The reason why I want to get it now is because of the 5 Blu-Ray movie thing and the fact that I might be able to geta 60gb for $450 through discount. Anyways those of you who have watch movies 1080p, how much better are they compared to upscaled DVDs bacause that is what I'm doing right now. I have a 360 and plan to game most of the mutiplatform games on it. But now I want a hd player and I was going to buy the 360 add-on but I feel like the HD-DVD format will eventuall die out. So basically what I asking is are Blu-Ray movies way better then upscaled movies and to those that have movies from the selection of free movies whos the video quality on them?

Of course Blu-ray is better than an upscaled DVD.  You are comparing 480i to 1080p what do you think would look better?

I can't comment on the free Blu-ray deal as I live in Australia, but the Blu-ray movies I have all look amazing.

the 5 blu ray deal is not very good, the movies you get to choose from are pretty lame

but, i would get one if you want the 60 gig for the cheaper price

If you have a high-vision (high definition) display that is capable of 1080p output, you definitely will notice (and love) the blu-ray movies!

I have never seen the quality of any other blu-ray player .

Does anyone know how the PS3 compares to other blu-ray players other than the obvious fact that it also plays games.

I just purchased 300 and some of it looks kind ofgrainy but I think thats the way the movie was made.

On the other hand Ant Bully looked amazing.

The PS3 compares pretty well with other Bluray devices. http://www.pcworld.com/article/id,127892-c,dvddrivesmedia/article.html (This article is a bit outdated, some features have already been altered by updates)

Oh, as for grainyness, that is something that comes with the process of filmmaking, nothing to worry about.

300, Casino Royale, and Pirates are all incredible. So yeah Blu Ray blows both upscaled DVD's and HD DVD's out of the water.

300 is suppose to look that way...many parts of the film look incredible, where 300 really shines is with the PCM 5.1 soundtrack...will rock your house!!!....Pirates of the Carribean are the best looking HD movies I have seen so far.

PS3 is a good player for the money, for sure. The Departed looks fantastic on it, I can say that. It also has pretty good upscaling capabilities. Note that the PS3 doesn't come with an HDMI cable, and that if you're going to be using the BluRay player, you'll be wanting one of those.

But, like you, TC, I have a 360 as well. Mainly bought it for BluRay, though I'm certainly going to pick up Final Fantasy and LA Noire and a couple others here and there... but it's $500, it plays BluRays and plays your old PS2 games. Sounds worth it to me. Also, Ninja Gaiden Sigma is a killer remake. Don't know if you've played through Ninja Gaiden Black, but this is better.

Hell yes, Blu Ray is 4 times better than DVD's and way better than HDDVD as well, and you really ought to buy your multiplat games on PS3 as well. But yes, go Blu Ray, get a PS3 and make it your main console while you're at it.

Upscales DVDs, built-in wireless, ethernet port, hdmi 1.3 capable, and my wife uses it for Netflix blu-rays more than I do for games and internet combined... sounds worth it to me, and I picked mine up when it was $600. Definantly get an HDMI cable. Also, I've messed with a few standalone players at work and their load times are sooooo slow! PS3 blu-ray movie load times are almost DVD fast if not right on.

The PS3 is an excellent Blu-ray player. When the PS3 was first released, home theater magazines ran tests using the PS3 and the current Blu-ray players to determine the best Blu-ray player for the home theater crowd. The PS3 was the winner. Even now if you go to a home theater forum like AVS you will find the PS3 being recommended as the Blu-ray player to buy. That will probably change once the price drop for the standalone Blu-ray players happens this fall, but it's nice to know that the PS3 is no slouch when it comes to Blu-ray movies.

Oh! because there are so many to compare! Wait until PS3's life has reached 2yrs (like the 360) then decide. Sony has made the bold statement that the PS3 is built to last 10yrs, things like that arn't just said for the fun of it and it makes you wonder what Sony has up its sleeve.

or maybe sony was just blowing smoke up ur a**. hey i have a ps3 too, but the fact is that multiplat games do run better on the 360. and all the sony fanboys can say just wait until a year from now, but ill believe it when i see it. and i only said that bc the original person i quoted said to get all the multiplat games on the ps3 too, but why would he wanna do that when so far theyve all been worse, not including oblivion

yeah but when the ps2 came out it really didnt have any competition, so it was a lot easier to get a large fanbase. this gen 360 came out earlier, which has helped it get a nice fanbase, which has led to sony losing some exclusives. things wont be the same this gen for sony. even if they end up winning this gen (which i dont think they will) it sure isnt gonna be by the same landslide that the ps2 won by. ps3 better start coming out with some good games soon. all of their big hitters arent coming out for a while. and one of its exclusives that sony fanboys threw out there while defending the ps3's game lineup was lair, and in this months EGM it got ratings of like 6.0, 6.5, and 5.5, or somwhere around there, i know that none of them were in the 7s. sony needs big time exclusive games fast. thats what helped the ps2, bc it was dominating dreamcast, it was easy to get all the big name games, but its not so easy this time around, and its showing

yes i know, its easy to overrate games, even 360 fanboys overrate games. and im def. not counting sony out already, im really looking forward to killzone2, and of course mgs4, but im just saying that its not gonna be as easy for the ps3 as it was for the ps2.

No it wont be easier granted because Sonyactually have some competition, but if any console fails now its the 360. There's just not enough history behind it to prove otherwise apart from the demise of the xbox.

yeah well good thing i have a ps3 too then lol. so i think im pretty safe no matter what happens

at the risk of sounding stupid, how do i add it to my profile?

HA...yeah the blue ray will be better than upscaled dvd converter, but they put out 720p and 1080i.

Nice try.

Ever since my HDMI cable arrived my PS3 has been my default DVD player ($7.41 delivered from Monoprice). My TV supports 720p/1080i, but Blu-ray movies at 1080i are still incredible looking. The upscaling is pretty fantastic, too. Obviously upscaling can't add something that isn't there, so some movies look better than others. But it is still amazing. I would swear that watching Star Wars Episode II on the PS3 upscaled to 1080i was as good as watching one of my Blu-ray movies at 1080i.

I don't really care for Blu-ray movies that are downscaled to 720p, though. I leave it at 1080i for movies. And it has me seriously considering investing in a 1080p TV.

good luck finding a blu-ray rental place. if you dont live in a big city like la or something forget it. you have to go online to rent and they ask you to sign up for a mandatory monthly fee and you can only get one as you return one. they sure are not worth anything higher then a regular dvd but, you'll be charged for the nice name. to own some. the best bet is to get used ones at TYe or some music stores too. they have plenty as people realize thev've be jack o la'd, since downloads are going to be the way to go in the future hence the the bigger HD's

lol wow that came out of nowhere. honestly, in the beginning i loved it. the gameplay can get pretty intense sometimes, and the graphics r really good. but the single player is really really short, and the story isnt the greatest, its decent, but i dont really pay attention to the story too much. and the online play was pretty addicting for a while, but too many ppl started glitching and the feeling kinda wore off after a couple months, but its still a great game. IMO the best way to play it is going through the single player campaign on co-op w/ a friend.

I can't think of one reason why anyone would buy a stand alone Blu-Ray or HD-DVD player when they could get a PS3 instead. Maybe this was SONY's plan all along.

Yes, Blu-Ray looks fantastic. Significantly better than upscaled DVD's. Put it this way. DVD's are 480p scaled up to 1080p. Blu-Ray's are 1080p native resolution. Which do you think is going to look better?

More importantly, the extra space on Blu-Ray allows for significantly better sound.

I'm not going to buy that many movies on Blu-Ray until the prices drop some more. I personally think that spending $30 on a movie is a huge rip off. BUT...there are certain movies that I would happily pay a premium on. For example, I just got 300 on Blu-Ray for $25. It was worth every penny. It looks great on my 32" Samsung LCD. It looks SPECTACULAR on my dad's 65" 1080p SONY BRAVIA.
