It's a lot different battle system-wise, but other than that you'll be fine since it comes before Final Fantasy VII. It's just that you would appreciate it more if you played FF7 before Crisis Core, but that doesn't really matter.
it's still a must buy for you... i 've played a lot of psp games, and so far crisis core stands head and shoulders above the rest. you'll enjoy it that much more if you were a fan of final fantasy vii, but this is still the best game on the psp by itself.
I wouldn't recommend Crisis Core unless you've played VII....because part of the draw to Crisis Core is seeing what some of the characters were like before VII. Understanding the story is also part of the reason one would get CC and not knowing anything about it may kill most of the experience.
What I did was start by watching Final Fantasy: Advent Children, and that gave me a bit of insight before playing FFVII: Crisis Core. But Crisis Core is an excellent game to start the series off with, as it looks like the games are all making to jump to Action-RPG. It'll just take the smarts to figure out how it all works. If you've played any RPG before, you'll probably be well off.
