if u get the 40gb ps3, it can only play ps1 and ps3 games, not ps2. but if u get the 60gb or the 80gb then u can play ps1, ps3, and ps2 games. i have the 80gb and i can play ps2 games just fine.dsan224
Ah, not all 80gigs. When the 40gig went to 80, other than the hard drive, nothing changed. Now the older 80gigs, and the mgs4 bundle of the 80gig can play them.
how is it that a ps3 can play ps1 games but not ps2 games ??TheGhettoDTI think it has to do something with the Cell architecture. Emulating ps1 games needs much less prosessing power than emulating and scaling ps2 games in to 1080p. Its not that the ps3 is weak, its just that its so different. The original 60gb ps3 had the ps2 graphics chip on it, but it was cut prolly because of manufacturing costs. Personally i havent really touched my ps2 or its game because the ps3 rocks. Im still gonna save it for those special nostalgic needs...
Mine plays PS1, PS2 and PS3 games (thank goodness)...
Its because you don't have a premium PS3.. (you can spot them because they a) have 4 front USB ports, b) have a builtin memory card reader and c) play PS2 games.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony started to sell PS2 games on PSN and give you Software PS2 compatibility in a firmware update..

Actually, the 60GB/20GB PS3 had both the Emotion Engine (PS2 CPU) and Graphics Synthesizer (PS2 GPU), on the other hand, the old 80GB PS3s only had the Graphics Synthesizer and emulated the Emotion via Software.
PS2 can be fully software emulated, it just takes some work as seen with recent progress with PC emulators such as PCSX2. PS3 can more than handle software emulation, Sony just doesn't want to put the time and resources into it.
Sony took out PS2 BC to save money. I'm guessing PS1 BC is much cheaper and easier.Floppy_Jim
