it can be done on the old 60GB, the old 20 GB, the old 80GB IT CANT be done on the 40GB, the new 80GB and i think the new 160GB but it can be done on the playstation 2 you own.

Time to do some homework checking. Step 1: Go Here Step 2: Search through your game collection, with the "80GB PS3" button selected first, then with the 60GB option selected. Step 3: If you have a game that won't work on either edition PS3, time to chuck it or see about getting a replacement PS2 first before you get the PS3. If all your games work in the softBC PS3, try to snap up one of the 80GB MGS4 bundles, *NOT* the new 80GB which is just as neutered. Otherwise, time to start scouring the net and your local used game stores for a 20/60GB model. The new 80GB Core and future models have NO BC whatsoever.

Following What I'd previously suggested to this guy, I myself have had a few games that were simply *not* functional on the soft-BC 80GB, but were perfectly fine on the 60GB model. So what will Sony do for us if(and - let's not kid ourselves - when) these units break and have to be taken in for service? I don't want to end up with a neutered unit in return.
You can only play ps2 games on the 20 GB, and 60 GB. The 40 GB does not play ps2 games and the 80 GB plays most of them. So your best bet would be to get a 60 GB, but you can'T get one IN STORES.

I got my 60GB from Toys R Us just this past January for $499. It came with a free Sixaxis because they were trying to unload their 60GB units. I don't consider that price gouging.
Also, on amazon.com, there are plenty of 60GB to be had for reasonable prices.

Plan and simple the PS3's you will find in every store nationwide will NOT have PS2 backward compatiblity. Keep yours or buy a PS2 while you still can.
