Can you play 1.85:1 movies on a 16/9 screen without having the image cropped?

I have a 16/9 (which equals to 1.78:1) HDTV and everytime I try to playa 1.85:1 movie on my PS3, the sides of the imageare slightly cropped to make themovie full screen on my 1.78:1 screen.

There should be very slim horizontal black bars, but instead it seems that the console opts to crop the image on the sides.

Is there a way to bypass that and preserve the original ratio? The pan and scan option is already deactivatedbutthat doesn't work.

At the risk of being flamed, my 360 does keep the original aspect ratio intact.

Thanks in advance.

Is this for Blu-rays, DVDs, or both? My PS3 plays them in their proper aspect ratio.

Have you got the scaler set to 'Normal?'
