No. Never. It cannot simply be done with a firmware update, if that's what you're thinking. You would need to somehow install a physical PS2 GPU (only the CPU can be emulated in software).

Gamerboi27

The 20GB model, 60GB model, and original 80GB model. All these are discontinued now, meaning no new PS3s come with the feature.

Some places had some back stock on the MGS4 80GB bundle. That's the only new PS3 you can find that would have backwards compatibility.

The PS2 support in a PS3 is a thing of the past and there will most likely will never be a PS3 built that supports PS2 games. I'm glad I bought the 60 gig system back in the beginning of the PS3 system.

I thought that is stupid. So many good games that we cannot take advantage of when it is not backward compatable. So I had to make sure to get teh 80gb so that I can take advantage of those great priced oldschool games -DP

Not the original 80GB model. What they sell now is essentially just the 40GB model with a bigger hard drive. That means no card slots, fewer USB ports, and zero BC with PS2 games.

Apple doesn't try to improve iPod minis. Therefore, it'd be logical for Sony to not continue 40 GB's. But, I wouldn't rule out the possibility of a firmwire update for 80 and 160 gigs that may SOMEHOW allow PS2 Backwards Compatability, as the 80 or 160 gigs do not have BC either.

Nope, there is no more 40gb anymore anyway. They made the new 160gb but that still doesn't have any backwards compatibility either. Sony made a huge mistake doing that, the only mistake they didn't make was keeping the PS2 around. PS2 is still a great system to play on!

What's your source? And how could it possibly work? Not even the old 80GB models used full software emulation.

XBox 360 does it with certain games, and Sony would probably do the same method of either slowly releasing patches to play popular PS2 games or put them up for download with the tweaks needed to use the PS3 hardware as is.

Although far more powerful, the 360 architecture shares many similarities with the original Xbox. This makes it easier to emulate. By contrast the PS3 and PS2 architectures are like night and day. This is why Sony decided to use hardware emulation in the first place.

Just buy the 80gb that's out now and leave your old PS2 gaming behind you, as PS3 gaming is far better.

Or put the RSX to work and have that emulate the PS2's Graphics Synthesizer.

Its impossible. Sony would have to individually program every PS2 game to work on the new PS3's as they removed every piece of hardware associated with the PS2.

That is a waste of both time and resourcesconsidering nobody cared about BC when the 20/60 gig had full. Nobody bought the machine. The PS3-Lites you have on the market today are a direct result of that. So no BC on the 80 or 160. Ever. Period.

YES IT CAN!!!!!! But only the Singstar-games. And only in Eurpoe. But hey, its a sure sign something is coming in the future. But probably after they finally retire the PS2.

I could digg up some source, but I wont bother since they will be in Norwegian. I will if you spam me and hassle me enogh just to prove you wrong.

No. ps2 looks like utter **** on a high def TV. ps2 games on ps3 and ps1 games on a ps3 look far better than they do on a ps2 with the same display... and even on the same video connectors. Also, having to support a ps2 and a ps3 side by side is akin to what Sega wanted us to do when they started doing the Sega CD and 32X add-ons... require multiple outlets to support what a single console should be able to do. Only with Sony here, it means having to have two sets of controllers, video cables, memory cards, *and* outlets to support what a single console should have no problem doing. It's a load of horse **** that Sony neutered the systems now. And it ticks me off, because if this ps3 I have now fails again, it means either paying up ANOTHER $150 to send it in to Sony, or $1000 to get a new one on eBay with no warranty at all.

The new 80 and 160gb model is basically the old 40gb with a bigger hard drive and a DS3 packed in instead of the sixaxis. That's it.

Unless there's a reliable source and link or announcement coming from Sony themselves, no 40 gb and current 80 gb and 160 gb will have PS2 backward compatibility.
