I'm thinking of getting a PS3 after the 360 fried, and wondered if the PS3 actually plays Blu-Ray movies???  Sorry if this is an ignorant question but I want to make sure I know what I'm getting.  I'd love to be able to watch HD movies on "DVD".  I don't know squat about HD-DVD vs. Blu-Ray.  Are they equal in quality?

yes it can play bluray :) you can check wikipedia for more indepth facts (remember that it could've been altered on that site, but you'll get a general idea)

basically bluray: can be programmed, supported by most movie companies, and can store 25gb on each layer. :)

blue-ray is 25gigs and 50gigs(duel layered) in capacity. HD-DVD is 30gigs I think.

the PS3 is a blue-ray disk player, yes. Instead of a red laser to read disks, it uses a more powerful blue-violet laser, which is smaller in diameter, to read the tightly packed code on a blue-ray disk

:) Thank you raualex and Mordred.  I appreciate your responses.

 I don't know if the rest of you were making fun of me, but if you were that is extremely rude.  I came to this board for your experience and you don't need to be insensitive.

No way, and don't listen to anyone.  If you put in a Blu Ray movie your PS3 will asplode!
