Only on the 20GB,60GB and 80GB versions (be advised that the 80GB version only uses a software backwards compatibility method...meaning not all PS2 games will be compatible).

As long as you don't get the 40 gig system then it should be OK. The 40 gig PS3 will not play any PS2 games and the odds of there ever being a software download to support the games on this console are slim to non. Reason being the hardware needed to support the PS2 games was removed from the 40 gig systems. If you happen to get lucky enough to find a 60 gig system then that was the best all around PS3 that has been released so far.

Nope, just buy an old PS2 for next to nothing nowadays and play it on that.

There is no way of getting the hardware needed in the 40 gig system (unless you can somehow take all the hardware from a 60 or 80 gig system and replace the 40 gig hardware) in which would be a very costly way of even trying to get the BC support in the 40 gig system. Sony isn't even trying to develope any update to make this possible at any time because the cost would be much more than it would be worth. The 40 gig system is the ansewer Sony gave the NTSC people that complained about the price of the 60 gig systems, unfortunatly the PAL consumers didn't have the 60 gig system offering very long and now they only have the 40 gig system without any BC support.

Inside www.playstation.com there's a page where you can check if the 80GB will play your game without major problems.

U don't have your ps2 anymore? Don't want to re-buy one for $60-$80? Don't own a 360 or old school xbox to play on? And you own the 40 gb? Obviously BC wasn't that important to you, or it was an afterthought. Don't feel bad, though, you should be playing GTA IV anyway.
