Can I play ps1 games on ps3 console ?

Hi,

I'm buying a playstation 3 (PAL) when I get back home and I was wondering if I can play a playstation 1 game (Chrono Trigger) which is NTSC on my new playstation 3 ?

only the old 60gb can play ps1/ps2 games. ebay best place to get them

all ps3 model plays ps1 games, the 20, 60 and old 80 gigs plays both ps1 and ps2 games, however I think ps1 and ps2 games are region locked, Im not sure though

Any PS3 can play PS1 games, but they are region locked. So unfortunately, I don't think you'll be able to play Chrono Trigger. I may be wrong though, you can try playing it and see what happens.

yes all ps3 play all ps1 games

All PS3s can play PS1 games, but they ARE region locked. For your PAL PS3 you would need a PAL version of the game.

Ummm...because they don't make them anymore? PS2 games are region locked as well. The PS3 in itself is not region encoded, it's the games that are locked or "free".

Yes, all PS3 models (slim & phat) plays PS1 games and like many said, they are region locked (for PS1, not PS3 games), in order to play a NTSC version of the game, you'll need the NTSC system or just get the PAL version of the game.

im fairly certain u can play ps1 games on ANY ps3.....its the old 60gb that can play the PS2 games.

So not just from the PlayStation Store but on CD's as well? I am getting a PS3 soon and I really wanna play the old Spyro 2 Gateway To Glimmer & Spyro 3 Year of the Dragon. So if i buy the PAL version of this game and put it on any PS3 i can play it? I REALLY WANNA PLAY THESE GAMES I GREW UP WITH EM

Yes. If you buy the PAL version you will be able to play them. I still play Twisted Metal 3 on my PS3.

Yes. If you buy the PAL version you will be able to play them. I still play Twisted Metal 3 on my PS3.

My NTSC Grandia and Wild Arms work fine on my PAL PS3.

I have a 80gig PS3 phat and it plays all of my PS1 games (on CD) except Wipeout 3 which crashes when I start a race! :cry:

playstation and ps2 both systems are not region locked. Its just that u would need a hd tv if u want to play different region games since the video signals of pal format is different than ntsc signal. I successfuly patched ( for it to work on a standard tv's) and played a pal ps2 game on my ntsc console.
