It actually is NOT a Blu ray disc. They may be compatible but might never actually leave testing.

This could make way for game compilations as well as bigger games. I will depend on how well the developer utilizes it.

Also, it can eliminate some movie boxsets.

It is possible because its 16 layers of encoding each layer having 25 gb. Its just like dual layer dvds. The only problem i see with that is that our ps3 may not read it because its not designed to read so many layers. An update may fix things up, but i wouldn't expect stuff to happen anytime soon. This is mainly because developers probably don't want to spend so much time and money on one game when they could separate it into 3 different series and make more money. The graphics can be pushed, but i wouldn't expect games to go much much farther than they have now since a lot of games can even fool me into believing its real and not fake.

You do know they have non blu ray discs that are can hold 1 TB plus right?

More space isn't going to mean better graphics either, so it doesn't really matter.

It may or may not work on any current Blu-Ray players... so... Cool in theory... but not worth the price of having to replace all of your blu-ray gear.

its compatiable, but you would need an update, meaning that you'd need to hook ur br player to the internet if u dont have a ps3. Search wikipedia under blue ray for more details, yes i kno that site is sometimes wrong, but most of the time its right.

imagine how long the game play would be with 400GB of space. wow... games prices would probably jump up cause of the more time it would take to create a game.

I really don't think bigger disks will make games any better at this point in time. we do have hard drives to install to. eventually most of the disk will install to it. for one main reason, read speed.

as it stands right now, rachet and clank lags every time im in the game menu looking at items, everytime i switch weapons i heard my drive speed up.

so just imagine how slow a 400mb or greater disk is going to be.

and if you check prices, 100 dvd's are actually cheaper than a couple blue ray disk. these bigger disks might actually save game develepors like sony money however as they can make there own disks..so for this gen of consoles i really don't think a bigger disk is going to help at all.

well the average 10 min cut scene took about 30 seconds to load. this was for a 50gb disk i believe. so times that by 8 and you get 4 minute load times, no thanks

If you're going to work it out like that then I'd be more worried of the 80minute cutscene it's loading.

Lol. That's a bit much for the next couple years. I hope the next Final Fantasy doesn't use 100gb because it would take so long to develop that it would probably be the only one of the series in on the PS3. Plus imagine how much installation space that would require otherwise the load times would be so long.

Wow, too bad the article clearly states that this is compatible with all existing blu-ray players, so yeah, good job there.....

Backwards

According to the Japanese company: "Since the optical specifications of the objective lens…are the same as those for the existing BD discs, it is possible to maintain compatibility between the new 16-layer optical disc and the BD discs."

So this means you can probablypop one of these big-boys into your newly purchased Blu-ray player and still access all the large space optical goodness when released.

Pioneer has promised more information on the new technology at the Symposium on Optical Memory and Optical Data Storage 2008, which sounds thrilling, on the 13 July.

end of story.

it says its theoretically compatable. and blu lens lasers could read the discs. they aren't actually blu ray discs and why dont you fools do a search for holographics discs. the have a demonstrated 3.9 terabyte capacity

Well, I say that it'd be great for an MMORPG for the PS3. Also, when the developers get familiarized with the PS3's architecture, they can finally put all that to good use and make the graphics, sound, and gameplay even better for the games to come. Good job SONY.

I think all games should just be released on dual layer blu-rays (unless they have longer seek times) and just do what uncharted did, with copying al the information over and over again on the disk so that there are little to no load times.
And if this would have made MGS4 have no load times ... i'd pay for that, because for me that was the only thing within that game that i did not like. The load times took away from the game (I dont mind the Act Install's - I actually liked those, gave me a break) but the load times within the act especially during a chase scene, really took away from the craziness of that scene.
