Biggest Surprise of 2009?

What game came out of nowhere to pleasantly surprise you?

For me - God of War Collection - The game was announced mere weeks before it came out. I suspected it would just be a minor upgrade from the previous releases.

WRONG. This game is gorgeous in HD, and I love having two full games on a single disc. I never played through the originals so it was a real treat for me.

I will have to admit that I was very surprised by Batman as well. After all the stories which claimed that bribes for early reviews I shale admit it, I was convinced we had another Kane and Lynch on our hands. So when the demo showed a bit of promise and the final game was one of the best action games I have played this year.

Also I was impressed with Infamous as well. Leading up to the demo's release I had 0% interest in said game and after the demo came out i got to around 70% and found the game to be fun to play.

Then finally I was surprised by the writers of Killzone 2. I never knew they had tourettes or modeled the whole games cast off Joe Pesci's character from Goodfellas.

Uncharted 2 wasn't even on my radar until like 2 weeks or so before release. And it is now a top 10 all time game for me.

Arkham Asylum, a really good game and good replay value can't wait for the sequel

Like a lot of people in this thread, I hadn't expected Batman to be as great as it was. Also, I spent years thinking my dream of an online version of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 would never, ever happen. So that was easily my favorite surprise of 2009.

I would have to say Brutal Legend. I wasn't expecting much, it looked a bit cartoony and cheap, and I thought the whole metal theme would be done really badly, but I was pleasantly surprised. The game is really good quality, has a great storyline and characters, and it's really funny. It's also a great tribute to metal music, better than I thought it would be. \m/

Definitely Borderlands.

Bought on a spur of the moment thing because a friend wanted to play with me, even though I had never given this game a second glance or hyped it during pre-release, but it was actually a solid title, if not a tad buggy.

Infamous for me. I'm really not into open world games and yet I loved this game. Also, I had faith in Arkham Asylum from very first footage so I wasn't as surprised as everyone else.

Definitely Batman. I thought it looked cool in all the trailers and screens, but I still wasn't completely sold, but after playing the demo I bought it day 1 and loved it. Much better than I was expecting. Also BlazBlue was a pleasant surprise. I don't normally like fighting games but I just bought it on a whim and really had a lot of fun playing it.

On topic, I was expecting inFamous to be an ok game at best. But as it turns out, it's one of the top games I've played this year. Same for Batman. Thought it would be alright, but instead it turned out to be amazing!

Modern Warfare 2. I expected COD4's multiplayer but refined and improved greatly but no. They just took COD4's engine, made it more noob friendly so much that a monkey on it's final death twitches impaled on a stick could rack up a ton of kills. The matchmaking and spawn system is honestly the worst I've ever seen in a multiplayer.

On a good note though inFamous really surprised me. I thought it was gonna fail and have a stupid storyline instead I got one of the best and most unique storylines along with kickass gameplay. Really happy about inFamous.

like everyone else i thought there was no such thing as a comic book turned video game. batman aa definitly had its way with that theory. and then fight night round 4 too. brilliant graphics, great physics, and a fun and approachable control scheme. its now the game me n my friends play most.

ye batman was great graphics, physics and the storyline was great.

so glad this game didn't come out when the movie did because, it might of gotten overlook

I think its a toss-up between UFC 2009 and Call of Juarez. They were both games I expected to have fun on for a few months maybe if im lucky but both turned out to be awesome and still playing to this day :)

inFAMOUS.

I was surprised the game received AAA since it was hardly hyped and I was even more surprised the fact I enjoyed the game despite not being a fan of the sandbox genre.

Biggest surprise to me is the attention/stellar reviews Demon's Souls has gotten in the west.

Demon's Souls is literally like in the top 5 best reviewed games of the year, and to most it came out of no where.

Heck it even got RPG of the year at GS and GT. Its online system i also winning allot of innovation awards too.

Batman. Game was excellent. Didn't expect to like it so much. Turned out to be my 2nd favorite game this year and is easily in my top 3 of PS3 games.

a game that surprised me was Killzone 2. Im not a fan of FPS so i wasnt following this game at all and had no expectations for it so when i played it i found it to be a lot of fun and i love the multiplayer and i didnt find the controls bulky and annoying at all in fact i thought the controls were great

And the surprise i got yesterday, i rented out prototype and IT SUCKS ****! I mean i remember in july(or when it came out along with infamous) everyone's like oooooo its infamous vs prototype, cole vs alex! Far out Prototypes a crappy as game, its so unorganised i thought it would have been good but i was wrong, graphics infamous wins, story infamous wins and gameplay infamous carves up.

Only thing that makes me happy now is that heapsa 360 fanboys still think prototypes better than infamous, HA! I laugh at them.

Batman game Im a big fan of batman and all of the games that had batman in them all suck excpt for this game which is on my top ten all time games story wise,its like everything batman is good now from movies tooo video games well they didnt get the cartoon right just well besides the old batman cartoon in the 90s that the good old days..

My biggest surprise of this year was Infamous. It was better then I ever expected. Red Faction was also alot of fun to play.james007_14
