i noticed on sony's website that the only ps3's they make now arent backwards compatible? is there something you can get for them to make them backwards compatible? because the whole reason i wanted a ps3 was because of bluray and old ps2 games

Someday I believe, or hope, that BC comes back to the PS3. I was fortunate enough to get an 80g BC console.
it hasen't been around since the four port 80 gig (which I have8) ). They stopped because it was to expensive and they were losing money. If it gets cheaper to make it do it, then they will probably start soing it again.
Putting the chip in, i can understand could be slightly expensive but i dont see how adding software emulation is that expensive. They wont be adding it to the PS3 until the PS2 is done and every last console is sold.Kurushio
Well, seeing how Sony is STILL losing money on the PS3 they are trying to make it as cheep to make and expensive to buy as posible.
the emulator doesnt look that good u gotta find a 60 gb imo..the actual chip makes my ps2 look really good im happy i have the 60
Well since the older 80GB PS3 does have the PS2 Graphics chip I don't think they would look any worst than the 60GB. Where they might have issues is in the game play since of the emulation(no emotion engine chip like 60gb and 20gb) in the 80GB. Hey I have the 80GB and about 15 PS2 games and I haven't seen any issues. I mean it is still around 80%-85% compatible with PS2 games. So not as good as the 60GB but at least it is pretty decent. The easiest way to know which systems are BC is by the USB ports. 4 means BC and 2 means no BC.
Nope. Only the first PS3's had PS2 chips in them and then later on i think the 40GB had an emulator. Its dumb that they dont include it but they obviously know that the PS2 hardware is still selling well. You would be best off getting the cheapest PS3 and then getting a PS2 for the old games. Im sure in a few years they will probably do an update that adds the emulator to all PS3's but that wont help you right now.Kurushio
Correction: The original 80GB models had partial emulation. Meaning that the Emotion Engine CPU was software, but the Graphics Synthesizer GPU was still hardware. The 40GBs removed the latter, making PS2 playback impossible. The 160GB and newer 80GBs are the exact same hardware, except with bigger included hard drives.
Why Are People Buying PS3's To Play PS2 Games....Just Go And Buy A PS2 If You Want To Play PS2 Games
