no like can i play 720p ONLY games on my 1080i TV and still get a HD picture?

as in do they scale the games to 1080i from 720p like the XBOX 360, or does it still downscale 720p to 480p?

u view the games as they are made to be viewed

depending on your tv that is what will be shown

games r not downscaled to 480

hmmm dunnno if it is downscaling or upscaling but i will give you guys an example

on the back of FIFA 08 the only HD resolution it supports is 720p. My TV only supports 1080i so when i play FIFA it gets downscaled to 480p and doesnt play in 1080i.

but on the XBOX 360 when i play a game that only has a HD resolution of 720p it automatically gets scaled to 1080i and NOT 480p

i was just wondering if SONY had a firmware update or a way to fix this?

This is not a problem I am aware of. Any 720p games I own are recieved by the television as a 1080i signal.

The PS3 is physically incapable of "upscale" resolutions. If you HDTV only does 1080i, then yes, the image you will see is actually 480p. Unless of course the game you are playing supports 1080i. This is what is so funny about those PS3 owners who have spent $2500 on 1080p HDTV's!! There are what, currently 4 or 5 PS3 titles that support 1080p natively. 90-95% of PS3 titles currently on store shelves are either 720p native only or 720p/1080i!! So you guys that have 1080p HDTV are really only seeing that game in 720p...LOL!!!

ya it is sorta annoying how the XBOX 360 easily converts 720p to 1080i, but maybe there will be a firmware update or something.

I hope all games in the future support 1080p because then those games would automatically support 1080i :)

Not really because there is lot of difference in interlaced (i) and progressive (p) meaning if something is supported in 1080p it doesn't mean that it will support 1080i.

If your tv supports 1080i then it supports also 720p. Just connect ps3 with your tv with an hdmi cable and set "hdmi output"(at ps3 menu) at 720p.

i have an older CRT HDTV that only supports up to 1080i and not 720p

so when i play games that only support 720p as a HD format it automatically gets downscaled to 420P
