Don't worry about the story much. The 2nd Disgaea makes very little connection to the 1st, and if you're really worried about that then just wiki the story. I liked the second way more, so if you can't get both get the second.

Isint it better to play the less funnier version first so that it wont feel like a huge downgrade? Also playing first one first unlock's female samurai class (or was it ronin) on the second game.
Honestly I'd play the afternoon of Darkness 1st as its the origonal, I prefer Daek hero days, after playing dark hero days I'd rather play that over afternoon of darkness, then I dont up playing the origonal :P

I just beat Disgaea 2 yesterday and i have to reverse what i said. Disgaea 2 is really worse game than the second one. Character's are good and there is still lot's of NIS humor but not as much than in the first one. Also the first one had better story and cast. Main reason that i did like the second less though was the fact that second one had awful level design. There wasent basically any interesting map on the game. I hope that Disgaea 3 will be much better experience than second one.
