Considering HDTV's have been out for a long, LONG time and you just jumped in...it's clear to me that you shouldn't worry. You will be buying a 4K TV in about ten years if you continue your current strategy. So no need to worry.
honestly most 40+ people I know don't get what HD is, people buy flat TVs because that's what they find in shops, barely see an upgrade and have no understanding of what 720/1080/4K is ; so it will take time to have the 4K generalised
You'll be fine. 4K has limited value on a screen of that size, anyway - something to be aware of is that your ability to perceive the difference between lower and higher resolutions drops as you sit farther from the screen and/or the screen gets smaller (not that 42 is "small" at all, but hopefully you understand my point).
As an aside: I wish I had been in a position back when I was 12 to get $1000 big-screen TVs! I assume there was some saved up gift money involved or something!
You have absolutely nothing to be worried about. Let's be honest the PS4 can barely do 1080p @ 60fps as it is, you really think it's going to suddenly be able to handle 4K at playable frame rates? No I don't think so. Not many PC's can handle it as it is, I don't even think the next generation of consoles will do 4K.
4k right now is pointless. No games will be running in 4k this gen and I highly doubt next gen as well. As of now just to run games at 4k on PC you need SLI or Crossfire for a decent FPS. Now of course you can lower details and such, but then whats the point, 1080p and a higher fidelity of graphics is the better choice. For example DA:I at 4k on a GTX 980 runs around 20 fps. In SLI it bumps up to 32. Unless the PS5 and Xtwo have some of the beefist gpu's of the time when they are released, your not gonna be seeing 4k on them either. And devs are gonna improve the graphics as time progresses, which means 1080p will be able to push way better graphics than trying to force 4k. Sure, the next consoles will probably be able to play this gens games at 4k, but not the current ones at the time and make progression with graphics.
ps4's games are in 1080p, 4k will eventually be an industry standard with the next generation of consoles... it took 7 years to upgrade from 720p to 1080p (there are some exceptions but few), it'll take a console generation again for 4k... :)
Agreed even on PC with unlimited power running the latest games at 4K is tough to do without having to sacrifice graphics effects for less demanding older games like Dota 2 or games like that its no problem with the latest pc hardware its the Farcry 4's and Assassin Creed Unity type games that are tough especially if you wanna get a smooth 60fps you need like 4 gpu's again this is without lowering setting down or at least not to much I mean I'm sure all low Farcry 4 may very well run smoothly at 4K on a single GTX 980 but whats the point running a game with all those pixels if your turning down all the graphical settings to achieve a good framerate!?
