I am seriously considering buying the new ps3 slim when it comes out for $150 and it has 16 gb of memory. will that be enough memory to sustain a handful of games?

16? I doubt it has that much space, that's way too small. And no, that would barely enough for 5 games.

As long as it has an empty HDD bay for future upgrading the 16GB system will be a solid purchase. If it has no HDD bay, I wouldn't go anywhere near it.

Game install sizes vary greatly. Some will take but a few megabytes while others take up half of a HDD of that size. I honestly don't see the point if you are planning on playing a good amount of games. You would definitely have to upgrade unless you find games that don't take up much space or you continuously delete and install games.

Like the low capacity version of the 360, that PS3 would really only be useful for storing save games, though you also have the issue where you'll eat up space playing some games with mandatory installs. Depending on the price increase to get a PS3 with a hard drive and/or installing your own, I'd just go that route. With 16GB you'll never be able to download more than a handful of PSN games (plus keep in mind you need twice the available space to download and install any given game) and you'll constantly be deleting something to make room, giving you a headache.

PS3 has had many games that have "mandatory install". So I dont even now what they are thinking of offering a 16GB model. Numerous games take up 5GB+ of HDD space, and Gran Turismo 5 takes up to like 10GB or more. Of course, *IF* the 16GB model is functionally the same, and you can still drop in your own HDD. Then it becomes the model to get IMO assuming the price is right (i.e. $149). I would consider getting one and dropping a 500GB or 1TB drive into it. Especially if it's silent for playing Netflix movies, my current slim is starting to get a little too loud for Netflix. (the fan noise is a little too intrusive).

They just want the system in your house and will probably depend on you getting a hard drive somewhere down the road. People love to not spend as much up front, which is a great business move from Sony.

I have a 120 gb I got in '09 and it's served me well enough. But 16 gb is really just too small. Especially when some games have mandatory installs, which can easily take up 5+ gbs of space. I'd say if possible stomach the extra cost and get one with a larger harddrive.

It depends entirely on your own personal needs, preferences, and gaming practices. If you're planning on having a massive library of games and wanting to keep numerous titles installed, ready to play at a moment's notice, because you intend to frequently swap around, playing a dozen or more games at any given time, plus wanting to have those 'party' games available should friends stop by, plus you plan on buying DLC or downloading games from PSN, or downloading movies or music from the internet...then, no, 16GB will be woefully inadequate and you'll probably want to buy an install a larger hard drive before you even start using your PS3, else you'll have to suffer through the headache of transferring data. On the other hand, if you're not likely to buy a lot of games, if you'll likely get by mostly on renting or borrowing games, or if you expect to buy used, play and beat a game, then instantly turn around and trade it in for something else, and if you don't care about keeping all your saved game data, if you're not the least bit interested in downloading anything from online, then 16GB should allow you to play a handful of games - typically between 2 and 8, depending on the install requirements, with the average being roughly 3GB, but ranging anywhere from less than 100MB to upwards of 11GB - without needing to immediately delete data. Personally, I don't typically play more than a handful of games at a time - though, there are a half dozen or so I keep installed for weekend gaming with friends - and I don't download anything with my PS3, and I'm not especially attached to my saved game data once I've beaten a game I'm unlikely to return to anytime soon (and, when I do revisit it, I'll likely want to start from scratch anyway, making the previous saved game irrelevant), but I'd cringe at the thought of a 16GB hard drive. I don't think it'd be enough. The same way I consider the 4GB XBox 360 model a joke. The only way a 16GB model would appeal to me is if it were $100 and I was only using it as an extra console for LAN parties, or as a gift for someone I knew was likely only going to buy/play a handful of games a year.

HECK NO....even if you where just using it for games that's not enough. "BUT" I still think it's smart on Sonys part because it doesn't take a rocket scientist to upgrade the HDD.

What you should do (if the new model supports HDD upgrades): Buy it, put a large hard drive in it and you still would've only spent about $200 while you'll have more space than the current $249.99 (160GB) model. That is, if the new PlayStation 3 is $149.99.

16 won do sh*t for any one who wants to play games. seriously, some games have installs. Games like MLB The Show have game data files that are 4.5gb MGS4 takes up 7gb. PSN games and DLCs take up space too. Plus you wont get 16gb, you'll probably get like 13gb. Seriously, I have 40gb and I have no music, videos or pics on it and my HDD is always full from games. Having a 40gb is a struggle, I cant imagine how hard it would be to survive just with 16gb. You'll probably be only to play like 3 games

It's hard to believe that there once was a 20GB model!!! Like wow, back then it was totally managable but these days there's so much DLC content, forced installations and a lot more media content.

If you only play a handful of games at once it would work okay. Once you finished a game you'd just have to delete the game data from the HD to make room for new games, but that's quick and easy. And you could re-install that stuff if you decided you wanted to go back to that game later.

You can get a 16GB USB stick for about 12 bucks if you just wanted to copy stuff from the HD for future use. Or just get a larger HD at some point in the future. The PS3 uses regular laptop drives and they're inexpensive and easy to install.

As far as GT5, you don't actually have to install that huge thing to the HD, though loading times before each race will be longer. And you don't have to install all the game updates - you could just install however many would fit. GT5 XL comes with all the updates through 2.0 already on the disk, though it still installs something to the HD; I don't know how much space that takes up.

Its enough if you're willing to install/uninstall every game every time you feel to play it. I doubt it'll be 16GB. It was probably a typo and its 160GB

I really don't know. These sources could be right. If Sony wants to compete with Microsoft's 4GB $199.99 console, that 16GB PS3 really doesn't seem all that unrealistic.

thank you for all of the feedback. My personal need for the system will only be a few games. i made a promise to a friend 6 years ago that if Sly 4 comes out ill get a ps3, and that is happening this year. i will definitely buy that game, along with maybe 2 or 3 others to start off. i was just unaware of the amount of space needed for some games to be played

If it was official, we would've seen articles about it by now. I just used Google News and nothing's official. The product seems to exist and will be coming out for sure but price and hard drive wise things still seem to be in discussion.

Doubtful at $150. I could see a 16GB for $150 to battle with the 4GB Xbox 360.

LOL.

No.

If you throw in the mandatory installs, patches and so forth 16GB is not enough.

Hell 120GB isn't even enough sometimes.

Your going to need at least a 250GB HDD for storage.

Hell in my PS3 I've got a 1TB (1,000GB) HDD.

Probably be the same scam that M$ is pulling off with there 150 console. Mandatory 2 year Gold subscription at a set price and a penalty fee if canceled early type of thing. Combined with a HDD typo.

Be stupid for Sony to release a PS3 at 150 dollars with the only variable being the size of the HDD. It's too easy to buy your own 1T HDD and stick it in there, yourself....

No 16GB HDD will not be enough, Sony has a lot of manatory data installs. Way back in 2006 Sony killed off the Playstation 3 20GB because no one wanted that model with such a Small HDD. So the 20giger was discountinued, Now in 2012 Sony is bring out a PS3 with 16GB HDD which does not quite make sense.

Unless Sony releases it the day the Wii U launches which features 8GB flash memory. So Sony can state you can get a Playstation 3 with 16GB HDD (with Wonderbook) for less the the Wii U. This way Sony can get some casual gamers to buy PS3 16GB

But other than for a few games 16GB is not enough. Harddrives fill up fast with Sony's mandatory data installs. The PS3 16GB is the bare bones $149.99 entry model, for the parents buying the kids a console for Christmas.

I just got the 160GB model and in the first two day of just downloading handfull of demos and game trials, I had it half filled. Now, I didn't have to have them all on their at once really, and have deleted the onces I checked out since. But I was amazed at having over 70GB on their right away. To downloand the Ratchet & Clank All 4 One full game or just the 1 hour trial taked up 14GB - and the way it download things, I don't even know if it would be able to do it with just 16GB.

But if you plan to just play disk games and then delete the info after you play it, then you should be able to get by. The games should show how much space they need to play on the back of them for you to know and keep track. But downloading games would not really be an option I'd think.

Game saves are kinda important though. I guess maybe not it you only play one game at a time though and never replay games. Bottom line is he needs a real hard drive.

Thank you for your valuable input which I certainly asked for, several times. I'll get right to changing my preferences just because a 20 year old kid with an outstanding username commented on the games which I'm looking forward. See, it's exactly this kind of information which everyone in this thread, especially myself, is looking for, and thus should be shared with everyone instead of keeping to yourself.

Yanks2740

That depends on how much content you will be using. I believe it's a good option to buy the 16GB model if it's priced at 99$-149$ price range.

Quite a few games don't require HDD installs and those that do are averaging around 1.5-4.5 gigs of data depending on a game, some games don't need any or are very small. When you purchase the PS3 you will actually have 14GB free, the rest will be used by the PS3 core system data.

If you plan to play 2-3 games at a time then you will be good. Once you finished those delete the old data and install the new game.

Otherwise there are many hard-drives for the PS3 for 40$ that offer 250GB space and the installation is super easy and fast. Here is the link to do so:

To buy the correct one it needs to be: 2.5 SATA drive and preferably 5400rpm speed. The size is up to you. I have two HDD at 500GB installed on my PS3.

In the end you will save up good amount of money even if you wish to buy 16GB model and then upgrade. It's a smart choice and you have options after.

Can you upgrade the HDD?

-if yes: buy it and immediately install a 100-200++ GB HDD.

-if no: don't go anywhere near it, 16 GB is about 2 big games installed, it will frustrate you to no end.
