Based on the name, I'd guess it keeps the output volume level constant-ish if there is a lot of variability in the loudness of audio being played.

well, i dont think that could be it, because AVLS is Auto Volume Leveling System (or some other S word that has a similar meaning) but i'm not a sound expert, so i dont know what it could be...

AVLS is a hard limit on how loud it will play; it's related but distinctly different

I think that it's just something Sony put in with the updates to make the update seem big. But it didn't work.... But I'm betting it has something with how the voice sounds/music sounds, how clear the sounds are.

Play audio with the volume automatically adjusted to the same level when music tracks or audio with different volume levels are played.

Off -Play audio without automatically adjusting the volume level. On -Play audio with the volume level adjusted.
