PS3 Slim overheating

I purchased a PS3 Slim last October, and it's been working great until
recently.
About two weeks ago my PS3 overheated, my room was pretty cold that
day so I had my heater turned up a lot higher than usual. My brother
and I were using it to watch netflix instant streaming and I continued
to turn it on off all day, with only 5-15 minute breaks in between. I
felt my console and it did feel hot, but not burning hot or anything.

And then just last night I was downloading a demo and it all of the
sudden it beeped three times and turned off. It was only on for about
20 minutes while I was downloading the demo and a few themes. I felt
my console and it was barely even warm. Is this and actual problem
with overheating, or is it some kind of hardware/software problem?

Sounds like a hardware related issue. Though of course overheating could have been the cause of that. However, if it was two weeks ago that your PS3 overheated and it was working fine in between, and now all of a sudden doesn't work, I'm inclined to believe that it's not an issue of overheating. Of course, I'm no expert at this at all, so I would definitely see what some other users have to say. Sorry, this wasn't much help at all was it... :?

Hmmm, Call Playstation's support number and ask them. They may have to replace it.

Honestly, I think this is quite correct. Although it was on for only a short bit, the previous on/off preceding it was probably rather hard on it. Although the heat generated by a mere 20 minutes may not seem like much, the heat, or more specifically, the drastic changes in heat from bringing it down, then up, then down, then up, etc could've had a bad effect on it. Could be that that had an adverse effect on it and the last 20 minutes was the straw that broke the camels back and casued it to overheat, as these things don't take long to generate a fair amount of heat in general. That is harder on the system than simply leaving it on, actually. The exact ratio is...well.....beyond this simple computer tech (if it wasn't, I'd earn much, much, much more money :) ), but i do know that quick changes are bad.

Have you been keeping enough airspace at rear of your Slim?Only i've noticed with mine that it dont half pump out some warm air at vents at rear!

First time I've heard a SLIM related issue. I hope this doesn't become a trend, because I got a SLIM and paid too much for it to not be able to last a 5 hour game session.

Sorry, I wrote my first post in a rush and I didn't fully explain the situation. The second time my console overheated, I'd played it for a couple hours that morning then I turned it off. Later that afternoon I turned it back on and played for about and hour, then I shut it off and went for a walk, I was gone for like 45 minutes and when I got home I turned my console back on and started dowloading the demo, 20 minutes later it overheated. I completely understood why it had overheated the first time, but the second time it seemed to happen for no reason. My PS3 has plenty of space out the front and back of it, so I don't think it's inadequate air flow. My console is working fine right now, it starts up and plays games normaly. I'm mostly just trying to figure out if I did somthing to make it overheat or if there is somthing wrong with the console.

I've suffered that annoying 3 beeps around 4-5 times since I bought my PS3 Slim last September, right now it's been on for a few days straight and it's warm to the touch near the back of the console. (That's where the power supply is).

I doubt anything is wrong with your console, mine is working perectly right now...I would recommend just leaving it off for a day or so though.

The beeps and shut-offs aren't guaranteed overheatings. They're also signs of harwdare/software hiccups.

Yup, mine has only done that when the internet browser crashed. T_T I'll be glad when Sony release the better browser later this year.

There is no better browser. The TC for that topic misread.

The PS3 is a powerful machine. If it's warm, that means it's working well.
